Post subject: Suggestion for business outages
Vonage
,
Please note that my company is very happy with our switch of several lines to the
Vonage
system. We understand that as with all new technology, there are bugs to be worked out, and that can lead to downtime and outages. I have worked on many corporate phone systems for a number of years, and have a suggestion that will hopefully make outages less of an issue for businesses.
Of course, I do not suggest that any company cancel all of there lines in favor of the
Vonage
solution. Backup lines should always be used. Most corporate phone systems check a line before dialing out, ensuring it is working. If the line is down (off-hook, open, fast busy, dead, or a combination) the system will fail over to backup lines.
I have noticed that on the RT31P2, dial tone is given even if the ethernet is disconnected. Of course during some of your recent outages, I have had the problem that our system continues to try to use the
Vonage
lines and does not fail over to the backup lines. Can the RT31P2 be programmed with a heartbeat that checks the status of the
Vonage
system and fails a line if the system is down? Or can it fail a line if a call fails, then use a polling counter to check every few minutes to see if server has returned and reset the line? Is there another piece of equipment that we can use that has these features and is compatible with the
Vonage
system (just in case this is too much for the RT31P2 to perform).
I would recommend that you setup an email alert group that businesses and home users can subscribe to that will alert them to planed and unplanned outages. This way, I can switch the system immediatlely instead of waiting for users to complain.
Again, we are very happy with your system. It has saved our company thousands in the short time that we have deployed. However, with enhancements like this, it will be an even more valuable tool.

This is a users forum and, while monitored by some
Vonage
techs, not one that
Vonage
management would look at. I don't know that your observations or requests will get much attention by
Vonage
from here.

Well, then, perhaps you can comment on whether posting her would help or not.

Suggestion for business outages
I am considering deployment for our offices after successful usage at home. Thanks for your insight...
