Hey everyone. I finally got my RT31P2 to work with my existing router and everything is working great for the most part. I'm pretty sure I need to configure some ports in my router(s) to resolve my issue but I don't have a clue what to change. What is happening is when somebody calls me, my own voice starts ghosting and I hear my voice echo which can be extremely annoying, but then I just tell whoever I'm talking to that I will call them right back because whenever I call them, the echo goes away Confused

I guess that problem is an issue with incoming packets or something but I'm not very savvy with port configurations. Another issue I'm having (which I know is common) is with a constant background noise. It's definitely not a huge problem because it still sounds better than a good cell phone conversation but if port routing can help reduce this noise that would be most excellent.

My current setup is:

cable modem --> linksys 4-port cable/dsl router --> linksys RT31P2 --> 2 computers

Any help on this would be very much appreciated Smile

Oh and if anyone has a similar setup as me and needs help with configuring the RT31P2 to work with an existing router, I would be glad to post how I set it up to work properly. Smile

Thanks.

I can't address your router issues since I use the PAP2, but the background noise is an easy fix that works like a charm. Simply short out a phone cable and plug it into port 2 or just plug another phone into port 2 and take the receiver off the hook. Works great!!

not sure why you're set on some type of port deal, but I don't think ports have anything to do with any of your problems.
does the echo occur when anyone calls or just certain people who may be using the same telephone provider? the problem may be on their end.

Echo with Voip is a common problem. It can be caused by incoming levels on the terminal adapter being too high. It can be caused by the individual telephone you are using.

Try something easy. Consider the incoming call issue. Is it only on local calls to you or only long-distance calls to you? I suspect it will be one or the other. First, try a different type of phone; even if you have to borrow one from a friend or neighbor. Have one of the people you get echo on to call you back and see if its better.

If it isn't the phone, then call Vonage and hold and let them know that all incoming calls from local or out-of-town are echoing. They can make adjustments or hammer the CLEC in your area to fix the issue.

I don't really think its at your end unless its the phone itself or levels on the terminal adapter being set too high.

Kenn10,
I have the same issues with the echo. It is only on local calls. If I switch providers do you think I will have the same problem? Will another provider route calls a different way??

Depends on whether the "other" provider you chose is using the same ILEC for local service. I'd hold for Vonage and see if they can adjust levels before I jumped ship.

Speaking of echoes...I even get that when I was using a landline calling to another landline or even my cell...even when my husband calls from those lousy AT&T phones in Kuwait we get static and echoes or not able to hear one another...so Voip issues are sometimes on landlines as well.
