PostPosted: Wed Mar 09, 2005 7:34 am    Post subject: Interal IPs Change when reset RT312P - Port Forward Issues Reply with quote Back to top

I have to have a couple of ports forwarded to one of my 2 machines hooked up to my RT312P.

Everyonce in a while, once a week or less, I have to reset my modem and router to re-establish my internet connection. When I do this my IP addresses often change, like from .100 to .103 or .101.

Then I have to log into the router and change the port forwarding to forward for the new ip of the computer.

How do I keep my machines with one static IP from the router?
or
How do I set up so that all my machines (2, but may add a laptop every so often) on this router recieve the forwarded port?

Thanks

First, assign all your PC's fixed IP addresses. Use IP addresses for your PC's in the range of 192.168.15.100 and up for safety. Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Use the RT31P2 as the DNS address and default gateway (192.168.15.1).

Next, log into your RT31P2 and on the first screen (SETUP) find the item "LOCAL DHCP Server:" and set it to "Disable".

Reboot your RT31P2.

In this setup, your PC's have permanent IP addresses

Thanks, Kenn10,

How do I assign all of my PC's Fixed IP addresses? Do I do that on the PC or Router, or both? Where do I do that?

I'm pretty sure my Laptop is the same way, it is using dynamic IPs for my work network. How do I set up my laptop/router so I can still plug in and use my DHCP network at work and use my network at home?

Do it on your PC's that need to retain a fixed IP address.

You can always leave DHCP on at the RT31P2 and restrict the IP addresses it hands out. Just do fixed IP on the specific PC that needs port forwarding and assign its IP address outside the range assigned by the router.

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Network Connection --> then double click on your device (lan or wireless card)

Click the "Properties" button.
Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click the "Properties" button

Change from "Obtain IP Address Automatically" to "Use the following" and enter as mentioned above.

OK out once done.

Look at the setup page on the router when you log in. Its all in the DHCP section.
