Sounds like your problem is the reverse of what we have in Mexico... We can hear the incoming, but our outgoing packets are being lost...

I think that I will set up my Vonage box, via a PIC and SitePlayer, to give me callback - the 8 cents a minute LD to Mexico is a lot better than the prices that Telmex charges.. Then I can still get voicemail via the internet...

mribeiro , In Brazil you're better off either with AJATO (TVA) or NET - Both are high-quality, competively priced and you need not to fear problems with incumbent Telecoms.

I was checking and found some information that Telefonica blocks Voip.
do you have information if Vonage will work with NET (cable-TV provider in my area) ?
Thanks

I'm aware that you're well off with TVA. In the past NET created no problems for Voip for Net2Phone (prior to Skype-era), so it's safe to assume that they're still VoIP-friendly.

It's sort of reasonable to find ISP providers that are subsidiaries of incumbent Telecom companies to create problems - though they shouldn't per the contracts they have with their final customers.

Instead of starting a war with your ISP, simply take your business to one of the ISPs that can help you with your Voip problem, be it TVA or NET... Very Happy

Telmex is distributing a new generation of DSL “smart” modems containing built-in firewalls, PPPoE authentication, and remote management, and a complete web configuration utility.

I forgot the brand/model of the modem, but I remember it’s the next generation of modems Telmex is sending to their new customers following the older Speedstream modems.

In short, the default firewall settings are unfriendly to Vonage Voip IP packets and are blocking them. I disabled the firewall completely and installed a software firewall on the computer connected to the router (to protect the computer), while leaving Vonage open to the internet.

This solved the problem.

I should add that I’m stunned that Telmex has DSL. Because of this, I’m skeptical that Telmex would actively play these backward games of blocking Voip in an attempt to steer people back to their pathetic land-line rip-off.

I find it hard to believe that you were able to work around Telmex's ability to block Voip. I've been seeking a solution for a long time now and have come up dry. It seems there is more to it than firewall settings. I've gone through all of that. Are you sure you're using Telmex? and if so, would you mind sharing with the community how you supposedly got around an incredibly difficult problem like this? I don't expect a reply because I'm sure that you can not have done what you said otherwise a firewall problem would have been found out a long time ago.
But would be great to know if you actually did find a solution.[/quote]

Yes, it’s Telmex. (I visited a friend in the Puerto Vallarta area and fixed their Voip problem.)

Are you using this DSL modem:

http://www.2wire.com/?p=8

Then you need to enter its web configuration utility and deactivate its built-in firewall. I don’t know if it’s the default 2Wire firewall settings causing the problem, or if Telmex pre-configures it in a certain way. In either case, turning it off solved the Voip problem.

My friend’s setup included a Linksys router with the built-in Vonage Voip. They didn’t use any of the Prodigy software. In fact, the computer was void of any of the Prodigy Infinitum software provided by Telmex and simply obtains an IP automatically from the Linksys router, which obtains an IP automatically from the 2wire “smart” modem, which does all the PPPoE authentication.

Well....I actually have that new modem Vonage is sending out. I'll have to try that. I had turned off all the firewalls on my 2wire modem (while using the motorolla modem) but that did not fix the problem.

If your friend was in fact using telmex....then it's worth a try. I know that on the mainland there are other isp's other than telmex. That is why i ask.

I'll post an update as soon as I try the fix. Should be in two weeks by the time I get the modem sent from the USA.

Vonage doesn't send out modems.
