Post subject: What about considering EGO instead of Telmex/Prodigy
Hi,
I´ve been using EGO (fully portable accross many places in Mexico City, as it has no cables, just requiring a power source) and I´m extremelly happy with it and Skype.
I´ve been thinking of getting
Vonage
and will continue with EGO of course, as their prices are good (512k for $40 USD/month).
Is anyone using EGO and
Vonage
? Any issues I should be aware ?

I'm not baiting you with this question, I'm genuinely interested to know...why would an American want to retire to Mexico? Is it a lot cheaper to live there? And how are Americans treated there? I assumed Mexico was dirty and corrupt and generally unsafe, or else millions of Mexicans wouldn't be streaming across the desert every year to get here. What's the attraction for an American to want to live in Mexico?
Kind'a harsh there budy, but I'll try to answer your questions:
1.- Yes, Mexico is a LOT cheaper than the USA.
2.- Even tho there is still a little resentment from the old Mexican-American war in every Mexican's heart... mexicans have nothing against americans, so you will be treated alright.
3.- Not every Mexican is dirty and corrupt, or are you saying that every gringo is blonde and rich and doesn't have a cropt of corruption in him?
4.- Mexicans migrate to the US for the same reason every other person does.. "the american dream". They go there, work somewhere, get more money that they could ever get in Mexico doing the same thing and then they come back with extra money to feed their families.
Hope this helps you a bit.
PS. I am a mexican. I am not dirty nor am I poor. I will migrate to the US but I will do it legally, like a lot of other mexicans that TIME or other magazines fail to mention. Not every Mexican in the US is an illegal alien.
You have more false implications and misrepresentations in there than I can fully respond to. I'll hit the points that bothered me the most:
1. I did not say
Mexicans
are dirty and corrupt. I said my general impression is that
Mexico
is dirty and corrupt and generally unsafe. That has nothing to do with racial bigotry, that is a comment on Mexico's government, which I have heard repeatedly described as corrupt and ineffective. If I am wrong, tell me so.
2. Estimates vary according to the source, but like it or not, hundreds of thousands--and perhaps millions--of Mexicans do leave Mexico to enter the US illegally every year. If you don't think they are "streaming across the desert" then you need to order the pamphlet your own Mexican goverment publishes for citizens planning on crossing illegaly into the US, complete with instructions on how to survive in the desert. If I am wrong, tell me so.
3. I never said every Mexican in the US is an illegal alien. I never said illegal aliens don't come here seeking a better life. I never said every Mexican is dirty and poor. I never said every gringo is blonde and rich and is beyond corruption. If I am wrong, tell me so.

I will not get into this political debate here. If you wish to continue this chat we can do it either via email or MSN.
I was simply trying to answer the questions you had, not every point I made was mentioned by you that is true. I wasn't attacking you, I actually think your questions was done harmlessly, I was simply trying to clarify a few of the doubts you had.
Pardon me for my response, now that I read it, it can actually be taken out of context.

Post subject: Mexico--Forget IT!! No VOIP
Yes, prodigy/Telmex has finally put a stop to
voip
. Unless however you are a large company with your own server and 2mb access. This is what my friend at Aerocalifornia has and they are using
Vonage
and service works. But this is too cost prohibitive for the normal household user.
I think however there is a new service with telmex involved offering their own
voip
service. It's based in Mexico. (this is rumor to me however, so I'm not sure it will actually work). The company is called VOX at:
www.voxip.com.mx
They do exhist, but I haven't called them yet to find out if they truly have mexico wide access or if it's only in certain metropolitan areas where maybe cable ip's are located.
In the end (at least for now) we are screwed and prodigy has full control. So the only options that I see are satelite (if
voip
will work over satelite--I'm told marginal at best) or a mexican
voip
service that has access to prodigy's broadband with no interuption.
One thing that is working still for me is talking with my internet phone. But only on my MAC. I get the same interuption on my PC, but i don't think they wrote any software to interupt telepone service via software through the macintosh compt. systems. Still works great.

I started out with cablevision as my isp, but at nights the calls where very choppy, then I changed to infinitum, and sometimes it doesn't work but most of the times it works perfect. One thing though I had to change, the bandwidth saver I had to put it at the lowest because there was a delay in the voice. Last wednesday I bought an ego kit and at the beginning I could not make any calls until I called customer service and I told them that I had
vonage
, and they opened up some kind of port and now I can make calls, but with a big delay on the voice, so I guess I am going to return it next monday. They give you a 5 day test trial.

I'm using Ego and Skype and it rocks.
Can anyone inform whether Ego and
Vonage
have any issues at all ?
Or, eventually, does Prodigy and skype work ? I guess it doesn't work properly, right? If this holds true, then it's enough to change from Prodigy to Ego
