PostPosted: Tue Mar 08, 2005 11:08 pm    Post subject: Mexico - isp blocked ports what can i do ? Reply with quote Back to top

i have been using vonage since july 2004 and been very happy with service.

i live in mexico and before discovering voip, i was paying mexican monopoly company telmex about 500 dollars per month on long distance calls to the usa.

yesterday at 7pm the problem started, i can place calls, but no one can hear me.

i tried using another dsl account from telmex, and same problem

i changed router, same problem

i tried using a different service provider using a diferent voip adapter, and same thing kept happening

so i am guessing its the dls that has blocked my ability to place calls throught the internet.

this happened once with cable, they did this last year.

since there are no other options for broadband in mexico, just telmex and cable, i was considering using direcway, but i read it doesnt work

what can i do, is there a way to use vonage now that telmex has put a block on it

thank you

Not sure about mexico .. but in the US an ISP can get in trouble for blocking VoIP. If you give me your acct info I can change ur SIP port to get around it Wink

run a graph of your speed using the Numion router in Mexico. ( option at the bottom sets graphing frequency).

http://www.testmyspeed.com/speedtests/international.htm

I have been seeing system problems and low transmission speeds for the last few weeks (fluctuates wildly).

I upped my service to a 1M line and have not been having problems but do see significant fluctions of line quality ( use the Voip Speed test on this site to check.

Where are you? (city)

Maybe is a local problem of infinitum service, do you try www.vonage.com
if you have problem with this page, try another dns server.

I´ve vonage service and i stay in mexico too, and i don´t have problem with my service.

i detect that some dns of telmex the ip address of vonage go to cache2.uninet.net (telmex filial) or something like that.

I use dns: 200.23.242.202, 200.23.242.196 and no problem or try to make a DMZ to vonage router

I have been investigating this problem for a friend in Mexico as well. It seems everyone in his community that has VoIP is having the same problem, regardless of vendor. He lives on the East Cape of Baja in a town called Buena Vista. It's really starting to look like TelMex has somehow blocked service, or reduced uplink speeds to the point that they are too slow to work correctly with VoIP.

His problem is this. He can hear the caller fine, but they can only hear about half of what he says (very choppy) if they can hear him at all. He has TelMex DSL and has been using Vonage for over a year with no problems until Friday. I am going to have him test his line speeds at www.testyourvoip.com and will report his findings.

Any suggestions?

i used the testyour voip

and it says that i should take pony express

i used the speakeasy test
and everything is fine

same upload and download speeds

i have 256 download, i had the 512 service before but i found out
that the upload speed is the same as the 256, and there is really not much
diference when downloading or browsing the internet.

If it says you should take the Pony Express, then that is definately your problem. You (for whatever reason) do not have sufficient bandwidth to make VoIP calls. I suspect this is something TelMex or other Mexican broadband companies have done to purposefully "break" VoIP services in Mexico, as a lot of people are using them to make calls to the US, thereby not having to pay these companies incredibly high long distance rates.

Almost forgot, the testyourvoip tests are not based purely on bandwidth speeds, but on things that can adversly affect VoIP calls. Things that can make use of VoIP virtually impossible like latency, jitter, and packet loss.

After you run the test, click on See Detailed Results, and post them here.
