what I meant by that was, if you go to any forum (this one, another one etc etc) you will see virtually nothing but complaints/problems, with the occasional positive posts. but does it mean the vast majority of people aren't satisfied? probably not.
so when you said:
"Based on the forum threads, I would look at Packet 8 or ATT Vantage, or Tiime Warner, etc. at the first sign of trouble."
I can show you a ton of other forum posts of people who have problem after problem with those services too, especially P8 and AT&T. so every forum you go to, you will see complaints, and based on that, you would have no Voip provider to turn to (going with your same logic).
TW may be the only provider I've seen relatively few complaints about, but on the other hand, users of that service are probably a lot less computer savvy than anyone who finds Voip forums. plus they cost a lot. but they hold your hand like no other. so if you're willing to pay a premium for a cable or telco (i.e. verizon voicewing) based Voip service, you may have better luck. but again, most people on the forums are here to save money, not throw more money at the providers who have been milking them for years.
if you want my personal opinion, Vonage is getting as bad and has the potential to turn into these big bad corporations, and I wouldn't be with Vonage if I was personally paying for it. but we all know what happens when personal opinions come up in a forum...

if it's testyourvoip.com that you're referring to, then two things are obvious. one is you aren't using the golden phone test (which I don't think anyone does, at least not that I've seen) and second that you haven't read the faq.
http://testyourvoip.com/faq.html
long story short, the regular (non golden phone) test doesn't use any Voip line you do or don't have, it measures your internet/network statistics, which play a large role in the quality of your calls.

I've tried the TestYourVoip test (the non-goldenphone (I missed that option, I'll do that when I get home)) and the test could not complete. It said something about not being able to get to the SIP 5090 port probably a firewall issue. I have my RT312P hooked directly to my modem with no other router, I am running Zonealarm. Do I need to open a specific port? Is that safe? I'll probably email Brix support but I thought I'd ask here first.

heh, why do you think it's not safe? they had problems several weeks back where a lot of people had that error come up. but in your case I'd say it's probably your firewall. I know all these companies and websites i.e. cnet yell and scream about internet security and you're going to get your identity stolen and worse if you aren't behind 15 routers and 26 firewalls, but the fact is, a lot of it is totally unnecessary. anyhow, if you don't think testyourvoip.com is safe, or disabling your firewall for 1 minute will compromise you, then I probably wouldn't even run it.

I wasn't so concerned with the safety issues as I am with properly completing the test.
So to run the test properly, I have to disable my firewall or add port 5060 to the "safe list" somehow?

Is there some option I need to set within my RT312P?
Thanks

the test works fine for most everyone as you've seen, so I don't think you have anything in the rt31p2 that needs changing. I would shut down the firewall while the test runs to avoid having to add "safe ports" or whatever it is, but if you don't want to, then yeah, adding that port is a good starting point.

This is an example if capitalistic economics. You get what you pay for. No one should expect to get a Ferarri for the MSRP of $29,995

However, we seem to be getting Yugos or Kias, and it is the only store available. that was the scene before Toyota et.al. entered the market. their quality rose, upped the ante, and forced the Big 3 auto makers to make a better product.

Until then, we are working with the Windows 98 version of Voip. (Yes, it is a mixed metaphor, but I hope it is effective.)

Meanwhile...

WHEN AM I GOING TO GET MY PHONE WORKING?

It is amazing, but the heart of the problem lies with Vonage's practices regarding recycling and not repairing defective routers.

I just got this email:
Quote:
I have reviewed your account and have found the problem. It appeared that an replacement device was requested back in February and return authorization was generated.

Once an return is issued after 30 days the device is automatically deactivated. I have escalated the issue to our engineers to reactivate your adapter back on account ASAP and once that is completed I will send you another email.
Please do not hesitate to reply back if you have any questions.

Please let us know if we may be of any further assistance.

Steven
Tier 2 Technical Support

My reply:

Quote:
The replacement device was DOA. Thus, I resigned myself to using the imperfect RT, and sent back the DOA with a note stating that it was defective.

I have NEVER had a bad experience with a level 2 tech, and I truly appreciate your delving into the matter to see what was the matter in my case. However, I am compelled to ask you to further trouble shoot.

Reading the posts in the forum, I noticed that many defective RTs are merely recycled, not repaired. And that was the genesis of the problem. It came from Vonage's practices; and my failure to use a dead unit merely exacerbated an already existing problem.

Seems as if we have a convergence of problems that happened all at once: They sent me a faulty replacement, and I did not/could not activate a DOA unit. I kept on using the faulty unit, and their computer program did as it was told to do.

I am letting the forum know the reason for the situation, and the attempts to get the router back on line. Nothing has happened in the half hour since the post from the tier 2 tech to change the lights on the Lynksys.

Perhaps we will all learn from this.

On my part, I tried unsuccessfully to contact Vonage through the proper channels, but was thwarted. Thus I went to the Forum to seek redress. Guess what? IT WORKED!

On their part, Vonage has much to do regarding customer service, and dealing with so many faulty RTs. Their lack of sending a working RT to me to replace one that frequently reset itself only made matters worse.

Now to get my phone working again...

it means testyourvoip.com, detailed results is the gold standard for Voip tests right now. if you want some answers to choppy, broken, garbled voice, look there first. unless you have a pcx1100 modem. then you can replace it first.
poppajohn: if you went to a multi-voip forum or another Voip company specific forum, you would never use Voip with that logic.

What is wrong with the pcx1100 modem. I have had 0 problems with this modem and my connection. I have Comcast (used to be roadrunner) as my ISP.

I disabled my firewall, but the java test still scored terribly low. I called the golden phone both in LA and Boston and I got 4.4 and 4.3. And I think all sounds good, so I'm not going to worry too much about it, I just wanted to have some sort of starting benchmark.

if you want to know what's wrong with it, google it. it's a problem that is isp correctable, but several isp's never bothered to do it, comcast included. I also had a pcx1100 with roadrunner (who apparently did correct the problem) and never had an issue.
here are some, but not all, threads of users who have replaced their pcx1100. these and more are easily found with the shiny new Forum Search link just down from the top of every page now (thanks to dan for that)
