I have read several of the posts on choppy or broken audio, but I am not sure if there are really any solutions posted.

I have a RT31P2 connected to a motorola SB5100 cable modem. On a regular basis the incoming voice data is choppy or cyclic (I receive about every other second), it sounds like a bad cell phone connection. The person on the other end can hear me clearly. This pretty much makes my phone useless.
Cry

I ran a speed tests, but I'm really not sure what its telling me. My ISP (adelphia) tells me my connection is good and that their test showed 0% packet loss. I ran a ping test which showed from 6% to 10% packet loss.

Any thought?

Have you run the speed test from this site to see what the quality is? Look to the left of this page under Voip Spped Test. Adelphia has a bad reputation in some areas. Your SB5100 modem is a good one so I suspect crapy quality of your Adelphia connection.

they probably only tested from you to them. so your connection to your isp is good.
go to testyourvoip.com and post the detailed results. sounds like the "from boston to you" result will show some packet issues, but "from you to boston" should be decent.

6% to 10% packet loss doesnt tell me much without knowing how many packets were sent.

Use www.pingplotter.com to test your connection from your computer to your ISP's assigned default gateway. In general that is usually the weakest link and the most common cause of latency and packet loss. For starters set pingplotter to ping every second and do so for 15-30 minutes during peak and off peak times. Ultimately and IMO you would want <50ms latency and 0% packet loss. Start there and post your results.

What is "ISPs assigned default gateway" ? How do you find out what this is?

I am thinking a more valid test is pinging the Vonage 'gateway' (where Voip traffic from Vonage customers' phoen calls are directed to/from) is more accurate? Of course, I have been told the Vonage 'gateway' is non-pingable, so try something close to that server would help. Finding this 'server' is an effort in itself.

If your computer is connected directly to your cable modem and you did an ipconfig at a dos / shell prompt (assuming Windows OS) you would see "Default Gateway". The address listed for that is what you should first use pingplotter to check.

If however your computer is connected to a router and your router is then connected to your cable modem like this;

cable modem ------- router ------- computer

and you did the above ipconfig step your default gateway address would be that of your router. You would need to go into your router to find the ISP's assigned default gateway.

The first step is to rule out problems with your internet connection, and that is the connection to your ISP's default gateway. If there was a problem with that connection you have a greater chance of getting that fixed. If however the problem is further downstream (ie- between routers of different providers) then there is little you could do to fix that.

OK, I found my default gateway and ran the ping plotter.

Target Name: 69-173-62-1-gate.atlaga.adelphia.net
IP: 69.173.62.1

It looked pretty good.

However when I ran the test to other IP addresses I had some problems.
Here I ran the ping plotter to altavista.

For the longest time this evening I couldn't get the internet to completely load, but ping plotter still showed that my speeds were good to the default gateway. At the same time my phone quality sucked. Couldn't understand callers at all. Now my internet speeds are back up and the phone is fine. (peak hour issue?)

I went to testyourvoip.com and I had a MOS of 4.12, round trip latency 160 ms, packet discards 1.2%, packet loss 0%,

With the problem coming and going it is hard to catch it at the right time. I called my ISP when it was out, but by the time I got someone to respond it was fine. When I tried to get them in the technical support chat room I couldn't get the site to load. This has been a huge headache.

If you are on cable, looks like you use Adelphia PowerLink, your neighbor(s) are probably downloading MP3s or hosting an online game. Call your local cable service office, ask to speak with a PowerLink engineer or administrator, and ask them to analyze bandwidth usage in your node for a 48-72 hour period to see if they can address the issue.

I have been having this exact problem since last week or two. The Vonage end of the line has choppy audio issue but the person on the other end can hear perfectly. Has anyone else noticed audio quality deterioration in last 2 weeks. I will be running all the recommended tests and post the results tomorrow. If anything, after reading all the posts, I will be focussing on latency, since the download speed is impeccable. BTW, the Vonage adapter is in India and hence the network hops to make it to Vonage gateway will definitely be more compared to if the adapter was in US. We will see. Any help at this point will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
AJ
