I know I read about this somewhere but cannot find the info using Search:
My setup:
ComcastInternet---CABLEMODEM(Webstar)---RT31P2---VOIPphones(2) AND ROUTER(Dlink)---computers
I just got Comcast. I noticed that with my RT31P2 connected, and regardless I am on the phone or not, my bandwidth (rated at 3.00/256) drags. Downloads seem to decrease to under 1.80 Mbps. Once I remover the RT31P2 and connect the modem directly to the Dlink router, things fly again (sometimes download exceeds 3.6!) .
What's the deal with the RT31P2 ? Does it really need to hog that much bandwidth, even when I am am not using the phone? |

Have you tried installing the RT31P2 behind your DLink Router? That way your internet traffic doesn't have to flow through the phone adapter. |

I afraid you have misunderstood bandwidth in a cable system. However, you can find a very good bandwidth test at : http://www.2wire.com run the speed meter found at the top of the page. |

I just took my RT31P2 out of the loop, and it made no difference in my bandwidth.... latest firmware. |

When I say wacked out I was not meaning that my bandwidth was affected. I was having sporadic problems with games, apps and occasional delays.
Once I put in behind my WRT54G things worked perfectly as before. |

However, putting it behind the router you lose the QoS functionality of the P2 Right? For whatever that's worth. I'm currently set up
RR==>cable modem==>P2==>Dlink wireless==>pc and so far everything's been fine except for the network outages last week. |

Does the DLink routers support QoS? If not, then that function would be lost. My suggestion was to find the piece of equipment that was cauing the bandwidth block on their internal network. |

I have not tried re-arranging my setup so that the RT31P2 goes after the DI624 router mainly b/c I am afraid of losing the QOS functionality - I have already had enough voice quality issues w/ QOS turned ON .
In terms of 2wire.com, the response to this site seemed lot worse than the Vonage-Forum speed check. For example, I got like 300k downstream w/ 2wire then 1.8M with Vonage-forum's speedcheck. |

Do you have WRT's QoS turned on? If not, how is your phone's voice quality, especially if you are downloading and uploading larger files?
What are your measured speeds (e.g. using Vonage-Forum's speed check) ?
I guess this is one thing I have to try soon, just to at least say I tried it.
FYI - I do have a webpage where I occasional upload large amts of data...and I do download lots of data at times. My thought is my conversations would get killed if I did not have QoS for voice. |
