My setup is

Motorola SURFBoard -> Linksys Wired Router -> Linksys Switch -> PAP2

At random intervals, with no apparent pattern, the Phone 1 light on the PAP2 will go out and I will loose my call. At the same time that this happens, I will also loose all internet connectivity. This does not occur when I am not on a call.

Any suggestions?

Since you are using a PAP2, and you lose internet connectivity, there's probably one of two things happening. The linksys swich you are using is "locking" up and dropping your internet connection, or you actaully have an ISP internet connectivity issue.

The Phone 1 light o nthe PAP2 goes out because your internet connectivity is dropped....

Is there some way to stop the switch from "locking up"? And for the more technically inclined out there, is there a technical reason for this? Its a 100 Mbps switch, so bandwidth shouldn't be a problem.

I should have written that it may the Linksys router locking it up, or ISP issue. Do you have the model numbers/firmware versions on the router and switch? If the switch is an unmanaged switch, then it may not have any firmware for it, but the Linksys router will.

As far as a technical reason for the lock ups/drops - I've seen some routers/firewalls/switches have issues with the amount UPD SIP traffic that bombards the PAP2 when a call is taking place, (my firewall has seen over 1000 packets per second when on the phone).

It sounds to me that the increased bandwidth used while on the Vonage phone line is causing one of your routers or cable modem to crash. I would suggest to plug the phone adapter directly to your cable modem and see if that helps. If it works fine, then the problem is with one of your routers. If it still acts up, swap cable modems and/or the phone adapter.

I have narrowed down the "faulty element" to my router, a Linksys BEFSR11 router running the latest firware (I just updated it today). I will probably spend some time messing with the settings on the PAP2 but i'm out of ideas here.

Okay, here's what I think after sleeping on it.

Last night, UI set the PAP2 up with a static IP address and I ran the port forwarding off the main router. That didn't help.

And then I realized that I had 6 devices hooked up to the switch with only one line back to the router. So right now, my theory is the switch, or the fact that the switch is running a 600 Mbps pipe over a 100Mbps interface.

Unfortunately it doesnt make sense for me to hook the PAP2 in at the router. At least not in the whole "convienience" sort of way

I'm going to try connecting the PAP2 directly to the router, but if this works, it still doesnt solve my problem because I need the PAP2 to be about 50 feet away from the router.

Maybe I could run another line from the router.....

Rewiring my switch, I just realized that the PAP2 connection isn't operation at full duplex. Any idea why?

Ports don't always auto-negotiate to the maximum speed, which can be another issue. I don't even know the max port speed is on the PAP2, the manual doesn’t mention it, at least from what I can find.
If you have the ability to "lock" the port speed down at either the switch or the router you can do that to get it to connect at it's maximum.
