Four years ago I could use my 56K modem to dial out from my PC. Had BVRP software loaded to do the job. Since then I got Vonage(love it) and am using the Linksys RT31P2. My problem is that I'd like to "dial" out using my computer...I don't want to buy an additional speaker phone to use at the work station. I uneerstand I can get a SoftPhone for $$ but I'm not on the road so it's a waste. Anyone know of a software package that will let me use my PC as a phone through the router. Yes, my landline is and had to be disconnected so it would't "feedback" to my phones. So going back to using my copper line isn't an option.

THanks for taking the time to answer my questions... I am familiar with Skype and have it on my laptop - I thought the original question was if there was a software package that can be used to dial from a computer using the Vonage service.. maybe I am missing something but how would you use the Skype software to dial out on the Vonage services?? Question

Thanks again for your time and assistance...

It does not work with Vonage services. Currently there is no software that works with Vonage other than Softphone that has an additional charge and a separate number.

If you have a Mac try Jon's Phone Tools. Shareware and it works well. I've seen similar items for windows but don't know their names.

I just want to use my PC like a handset. Why should I pay a fee for that when I'm not loading the system any more? Why should I pay $7.00 plus tax more a month just to use my PC, mic and sound card to call out or talk. I don't mind buying the software but to pay an additional fee per month seems to make no sense to me. But I'm not a tech either.

There are tons of opportunity for fraud if Vonage allowed unlimited softphone use through your main account. For example;

1. Recorded telemarketing messages sent faster than realtime to voicemail boxes
2. Home brewed PBX to provide dial tone for multiple households

You don't have to use softphone if you want to use your computer as a handset, you just have to get a pair of wires from the adapter to your computer. I was unclear from your first post on what you had to disconnect to prevent feedback. If you could provide more information on what your current phone line setup is, perhaps some of the people in this group might have additional suggestions.
