PostPosted: Sun Mar 06, 2005 1:33 pm    Post subject: 2nd Phone line and ringer not working ?? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,
I am a new Vonage customer.
I have hooked up the phone adapter to my cable modem and everything seems to work fine.
However, I have 3 issues for which I wasnt able to find an answer:
1. When i plug a phone in Phone 2 jack of the adapter, I do not get any dial tone. Only Phone 1 seems to be working. Is Phone 2 supposed to be disabled or is the phone adapter bad?

2. I have disconned the phone line coming from the outside of the house and now have all the phone outlets in the house activated. HOwever, when I receive a call, these phones do not ring. Only the phone connected directly to the adapter rings.

3. My wife wants to use the answering machine in the phone (Uniden 5.8Ghz). In my account, if I have Voicemail enabled, then Vonage picks up the voicemail. If I have the voicemail feature disabled, the phone just keeps on ringing. How can I use the answering machine from my phone??

Any help is highly appreciated!!!

BTW, the customer service **** big time!!! I am on hold for over 55 mins!!! Hope they dont disconnect me now Sad

If you have just one line ordered through Vonage, I believe only one phone port will be open, not two.

Could you provide a little more info on your set up? When you say the house phones won't ring, what are you doing? Do you have a cord from line one on the adapter plugged into a wall outlet?

heck you wouldn't need them for most of your problems if you just read about your equipment.
1. as stated in the literature, the device has 2 ports in case you have 2 lines. or maybe a fax line. if you have one line, then one port is active. here it is exactly from your user manual:
"If you have a second Vonage line, the Phone2 port allows you to connect the Router to your second telephone (or fax machine) using an RJ-11 telephone cable (not included)."
if you can't find your manual, here is a link to it for future reference:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/rt31p2_ug.pdf

2. I'm guessing you didn't explain this completely, because it doesn't make sense. ok, you disconnected your house wiring from the nid. and you still have a phone connected to port 1. where do you think these outlets are going to get a signal to ring? or any phone signal? if the phone device isn't connected to them, they can't and won't work. it's not some kind of wireless magic. plug the device into one of the phone jacks.

3. these are iffy/tricky. what model uniden do you have? some people set their vmail to pick up after the answering machine usually does, in case they get a second call while already using the phone (I know your machine isn't working at all right now, just something to think about if you get it working)

OK...her is the setup:
1. I have disconnected the phone line coming from the outside the house.
2. I have connected the Linksys phone adapter to my Toshiba cable modem.
3. I have a linksys router with firewall which I have connected to one of the ports of the adapter. (INternet is working just fine)
4. I have connected the output of phone 1 to the phone jack in the wall.

All my phones are working....I can make calls and the phone quality is good.

However, when I receive an incoming call, the phones dont ring!!! I verified this by calling my home # from my cell phone. However, if I take one of my phones and plug it directly in phone 1 jack of the adapter, and call my home #, the phone rings just fine!!!

The other question was with the answering machine which my phone has. Will my answering machine work as before if I dont want to use the voicemail feature??

Thanks

unfortunately all I'm seeing in my searches is that it works fine.
here's one thread that mentions it.
http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic3091.html
it's definitely not an ren problem. is it a ring problem in that they don't make noise but they do say incoming call and you can answer and talk to the person, or is it they don't get any signal at all?

>>>To answer my own specific question, I got a new Uniden phone with VMWI triggered by FSK, and it works fine with a Cisco ATA 186.

>>Much better all around than the answering machine.

What is the question you are referring to?? In the last thread looks like the user went and got a new phone with VMWI feature.....
