PostPosted: Sun Mar 06, 2005 12:58 pm    Post subject: Second adapter for traveling? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello all,
I have 2 lines with Vonage, and one Linksys router with 2 phone ports. Right now I am using both ports on the router. I would like to get a second phone adapter and have one of the lines transferred to it, so I can use it for when I travel. (Every place I go to has an internet connection shared via a router) So it would be set up like so; Linksys router with only one phone port in use, and a second adapter plugged into one of the Linksys' net ports for the second line. So when I travel I can take the second adapter and plug it into any router without much hassle. Will Vonage be willing to do this? And how much will they charge for the second adapter? And what adapter can I get so I have the highest quality sound, and no freakin' background static?

Any help is much appreciated!!

Problematic at it's best. You see, you could clone the MAC and configuration from one router to the other. But what happens when both try to connect, will Vonage let both connect? I doubt it.

That is precisely why they sell SoftPhone.

I believe when you sign up for another line they ask if you want it consolidated or another device. there is no problem having two adaptors with two lines. the problem is when you have one line and want two adaptors, which isn't allowed. as far as what device is best, there are literally hundreds of posts on this. supposedly Vonage has new rt31p2's that are fixed, but if you want to travel, most people like the pap2. it's really hit or miss on the noise. so if you go buy a pap2 and call Vonage and say you want line 2 transferred to the pap2, it shouldn't be an issue.
I've never heard of a Vonage device (any of them) coming off of another Vonage device, but it shouldn't be a problem.

You might wan to try a different service provider, where they let you buy any adapter or router, or use a soft client(on the computer), and configure them to work with any phone number on your account. Vonage, I beleive dont wnat to give the extra convenience both from a business perspective and security perspective.

I don't think Vonage is using your mac address to id your router on the internet. First, some people have their ATA behind their own routers using NAT. Second, I spoofed the mac on my 31P2 before I ever hooked it to the internet, and Vonage had no problem finding me.

My appologies for highjacking the thread, but I had a question about this. What would happen if my MAC address that I cloned is used by someone else with Vonage service on their router?

With broadvice, you can select adapter from web portal.
Initialize both adapters with broadvoice.
To choose adapter by MAC address:
1) log into portal
2) select "my account" and choose "edit my devices"
Just unplug one adapter, before you configure the other.
