Well, you could keep your home phone until you are sure you like it, and reduce the features on it so you pay less, and forward the number to your Vonage number.

You could also use Vonage and assume a number that is a local call for your daughter (if available) so that neither of you have to pay LD charges.

I'm using the box Vonage sent me, some people here purchased theirs retail. I'm not sure what the advantage to that would be.

all of my calls to canada have been fine, though I don't do it a lot. I don't recall seeing many complaints about US to canada calls and vice versa.
you don't have to get rid of your normal line at all if you don't want to.
there are a ton of retail vs Vonage ordering threads you will find if you would search. the general consensus seems to be buying retail you can avoid the $30 setup fee and $10 shipping fee. and usually you can find the pap2 for free after rebates. there are a ton of threads on rebates too, which basically say it takes forever to come (it does take something like 4-8 weeks after 90 days of continuous service) but some never got it at all.
a few tests at testyourvoip.com, detailed results, is a good indication of how your Vonage connection will be.

I am IN Canada and using Vonage here, it works great for calling ppl in Canada or ppl in the US.. and calls comming in work great too..

depending on where she is, there might be a Virtual number avail that is local to her, and that way she can call you too for free, that way doesn't use your 500 mins Smile

thats what we did get the 500 min plan and have a number in Columbia SC too that my wifes family can call her on, we can call them, and if they want to talk for hours, they just call us back and it's unlimited. Smile we spend about as much on Vonage as we did on phone cards, and this way we dont' have to do all the calling, they can actually call us.. lol.. and now we have a phon ein teh house if I take my cell with me to work on the snowy mornings Smile

Some virtual numbers are available for Toronto. You can check on the Vonage website.

You have a few options. Either you get a Vonage number in the 416 or 647 area code and the cheapest plan (I think it's $14.99 for 500 minutes) then you use that phone to call your daughter's normal toronto line. But you do that just to tell her to call you back to your Vonage 416/647 number. It's a local call for her. Or if you just want to be able to call her it doesn't matter what are code you get for your line. As long as you're doing the calling. If you think you're gonna call for more than 500 minutes a month then get the unlimited package.

Finally you can get a normal area code plus pay the extra money for a virtual toronto number so she call call you locally too.

If you're only using this as a long distance line to your daughter than don't cancel your normal phone line.

EDIT:
The virtual line is 4.95 US.

ok.. you are in IL right.. I am guessing that you want to have Vonage in your home.. so you would get a number hopefully local to where you are, say Chicago.. then you could get a virtual number from Toronto 647/416 area codes, and thenyour daughter would call the Toronto phone number, and she would not pay LD cuz it'd be alocal call to you, it would then forward to your IL number and your Vonage phone would ring in your house.. when you called her, you would still dial her with 10 or 11 digits (vonage doesn't care if you dial the 1) but since there is no LD with Vonage it doesn't matter that you're dialling a number that would normally be LD from your regualr phone or cell phone.. your daughter could call you all she wanted and it wouldn't ccost either of you anything, except teh price of the service..

if you are having the Vonage service in your house, you would go to vonage.com for rates if your daughter is having it in her home, you could go to vonage.ca for rates, or if you want it billed you a US credit card you could still take advantage of .com's rates.. Smile it's a little cheaper after exchange to still get the US rates and then you won't pay 15% CDN/ON sales tax either.. Wink

we have Vonage with a main London number, then have a Columbia number as a virtual, we can except calls to either number and it's free, my wife is from SC and her family can call our Columbia number locally for them, so they don't pay LD and neither do we.. when we call them, our London number shows on their CID, but it doesnt' cost us anythign cuz Vonage calls are free anywhere in Can or the US.. Smile

Hopefully 1 last ? I live in Illinois my area code that i have is 309. They have 3 towns listed with that but if i would call those towns normally it would be a long distance call. I want to know that as long as i have a 309 area code do i have the availability of Vonage in my rural home?
