Post subject: multiple questions, very urgent
Ok guys, I have
Vonage
service currently. While re-arranging my desk I happened to forget which adapter went to what device, needles to say I plugged a 9V DC adapter into the 12V AV PAP2 device, while I didnt think anything of it, I thought it was odd that it wasnt lighting up. I continued to do what I was doing for about 5 minutes and smelt this burning smell, first though, damn adapter lol. While I didnt think a 9V adapter would burn up a 12V device, im guessing it was the DC instead of AC that did it.
Anyway, seeing as though I bought my current PAP2 at BB I plan on going back and buying another, first question would you recommend the PAP2 behind a Microsoft MN-100, or just getting the RT31P2?
Secondly, since the mac would be different and I dont have a land line anymore, is there anyway I could use the NEW mac address on my current plan? I really dont want to have to call
Vonage
to do it, since none of them (at least that I have talked to) speak english.
Also, this is unrelated but, when calling and USUALLY its just ordering pizza, from two different places, Dominos, and then a local mom and pop shop there is "stuttering" on the line or something, I can hear them fine, but I must cut out to them or something since they always say "What was that?". I hasnt happened yet to any other calls though, my bandwidth is more than enough 6mb/512kb (adelphia, ne pa) and my bandwidth setting is 50kbps I would love for there to be a option for even higher
.
Anyway does anyone have any comments/suggestions on my issues? hehe

well it depends on what you want the device for. the rt31p2 is larger but it also offers qos. there are lots of pap2 and rt31p2 informational threads on this board. you have to call about the new mac address. there is a higher option - 90. on the bandwidth saver there's 30, 50 and 90.
choppy audio rarely has to do with bandwidth, it usually has to do with packet loss.

hmm sorry, i am on the 90 then, im on the highest setting hehe... thanks ill look for the threads, almost EVERY SINGLE thread on dslreports about the rt31p2 is about humming/bad quality/returns so im worried, but i was hoping that might help the problem im having.

you obviously haven't looked at the threads here because you would find the same thing. you'd also find a solution (here and there for that matter) as long as you aren't using two lines. but the pap2 seems to have the issue as well. some people get good ones, some people don't. my rt31p2 is great.

what are your detailed results from testyourvoip.com

actually I just saw something in another thread that reminded me of this: if you get the mac address of the other pap2, try spoofing that in the new device. not sure if the pap2 supports mac spoofing, but the rt31p2 does.

Vonage
can't be using the mac address anyway. I spoofed mine in the 312 before I ever hooked it up to internet, and it got a firmware update right away. Further, there are members here that have their 312s and paps or whatever behind NAT routers, meaning none of those macs are getting out either. There must be some other embedded serial number in the device that goes out to
Vonage
- either that or the device somehow remembers it's correct mac and sends that in an alternate format, allowing you to NAT Router or mac spoof and still connect.

sandman, i was kidna thinking the same thing, since i always had my router in front of my pap2... im pretty sure when setting up the account it just asks for the mac address. so there HAS to be a way it sends the info to the adapter, maybe its something really really simple such as simply sending the account info/activation/firmware to the IP address and hoping the ports are forwarded to the device it links it that way?
anyway, so essentially are you saying even if i spoof the mac addy i wont be able to keep my current phone and such?
