Porting A Phone Number "FROM" Vonage To Somewhere

HI,

I was told by Vonage that the number they assigned me can't be ported elsewhere. It was implied because they were not under the same rules are regulated telephone companies.

What I wanted to do in relation to the above is to swap my Vonage and mobile numbers.

BTW: Porting your mobile number out cancels your mobile contract, and you will be hit with early termination if still under contract (can't just replace the number, as confirmed when I called Cingular, but this is a separate issue).

Anyway while talking with the representative he told me that once I port my mobile number to Vonage that I can't port is elsewhere EXCEPT back to Cingular. In other words, if I get Vonage, port my mobile number to them, then later sign up with Sprint and want to port my number back, I would FIRST have to sign up with Cingular to port my number to them then port my number to Sprint (putting aside the early termination fees that I later learned).

I did a number port from Sprint to Verizon for the CDMA data plan number (because I liked the number), and the rep from Verizon told me that people port numbers in and out all the time, sometimes in and out in the same day.

Did anyone hear of Vonage only porting back to the original provider which the number came?

Is there any risk of loosing my phone number by going to Vonage, due to not being regulated the same way?

My mobile number is important, and I can't lose it, so I am not sure if I should be doing this or not. Vonage told me there is nothing to worry about, but it is kind of strange they will not port elsewhere.

Can some help clarify the above? Thanks.

At broadbandreports.com there are posts from people saying Vonage simply refuses to transfer a number, to posts saying they did it in record time. Very conflicting.
