I seem to be working again...at least for the moment. Is anyone else up and running?

Back up here in Indianapolis... 317. My sister lives with me and just signed up less than a week ago. I am reluctant to recommend Vonage any longer until the system is more stable.
I sincerely hope Vonage can deliver the same great service it has during the past two years... and that these last three outages were only a fluke.

Unfortunately I received my device on Friday (outage day 1), had issues/questions regarding adding this 2nd router to my network and waited on hold for over an hour to get very little help. I got it working very quickly but was worried about the fact that I installed the phone router as the second router and would not get optimal performance so .....Combining Friday and Saturday - spent about 6-8 hours tweaking and reading posts from the wonderful people on this forum.

I finally decided that I was going to stop wasting my weekend on my phone service (literally spent more time on this new phone service than I've spent on phones in over 30 years). The phone was "working" so just use it.

Within 2 calls I find out I can't call outside my area code. (called tech support, 50 minutes later I give up) Ok, thanks to this forum I finally learn it's not just me.

So from my point of view - this service is horrible. But the more I read - it became horrible on Friday (my first day).

So my question(s) is:

Is this service viable? Sure many of you had good service when Vonage was small potatoes but now it's starting to look like a "clown car". It seems like Vonage has focused their efforts on marketing and has no growth plan. (Hell my AOL Instant messenger advertises Vonage so much it looks lik Vonage Instant Messenger).

I want to keep it because I love the idea but in 10 days I've got to make a decision. (how do you explain this to your wife?)

If you are looking for absolute perfection in your Vonage system, you're not going to find it. Stuff happens. First of all. this outage was not a Vonage outage. The internet was down, period. Even the wireless phone control towers, hooked into the internet themselves, were also down.

The disruption was widespread in some areas and sporadic in others. Kind of like a power outage, the overload cascades speading to other areas. As the demand on servers increases they begin to shut down sending out messages that they are out of service and are to be bypassed. This continues until all servers are shut down. This is what happened.

Complaining about Vonage is like howling at the moon. As a professor of mine once said, "Cursing the darkness is futile".

If your the type of person that complains at the drop of a hat, threatening to cancel your Vonage service, please do it and stop boring us to death.

May I ask what information you are basing this upon? I experienced the outgoing calling issue but my internet connection (browsing, downloading, VPN, etc) never went down. In fact all incoming calls to my Vonage line were unaffected. Just curious as to your source of info.

Where did you find this information? My internet connection was fine. I was listening to net radio, surfing and such.
Speaking of cell phones, I could call my Vonage line, but was unable to call my cell phone OR land line due to a problem with Vonage!
Nothing was wrong with the net, or calls to me could not have been received.

Again, you have no idea what forums are about do you? You think its a freak'n club and everybody hangs out and tells stories about the good times.

Making changes to a landline service is usually a big deal for most of us. It's not the next ham radio that dad uses in the back of the house. It's the phone that the family ends up with. So if people come in here and read all your "don't whine - just get along" crap then they're likely not to be informed. I for one want to hear what the issues are when I research a product or service and then decide if they're surmountable.

For any normal people who read this post (those of you without Vonage tattooed on your arm) - mbhn5204 is right - Vonage isn't perfect. They'll definitely iron out their problems - otherwise they'll go broke. Money always wins. You can decide for yourself if you want to be part of this beta process or wait and get jump later when it becomes a reliable service. Won't cost you anymore and may save you a weekend or two.

I'm a couple days in to my trial and I'm sending everything back. When you see good ole mbhn5204 at the Vonage altar - tell him I said hi!

Oh, by the way - during this outage I had outstanding internet coverage - not a single problem.

Well said ZRex...hearing about the problems and comparing notes is why we're here. I too would like to know what information mbhn5204's conclusions are based on.

Don't let him get to you, ZRexRider. There are some diehard "Vonage can do no wrong" types here, and we all know who they are. Just like there are always some Vonage bashers who show up for a handful of posts and then are never heard from again. But most of us are in the middle...not completely satisfied with Vonage, but willing (so far) to accept an imperfect technology in exchange for saving a few dollars over a traditional telephone line.

I don't blame you at all. If this had been my first week as a Vonage customer, there's no way I'd be keeping it, either. It's only because I've had several weeks of fairly consistent service that I'm sticking with them in the expection that things will only improve from here.

Sorry it didn't work for you. If you don't think you can put up with intermittent service issues or deal with the world's worst customer service, then you're probably doing the right thing.
