PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2005 4:16 pm    Post subject: Calling Out - 10 rings before called party's phone rings... Reply with quote Back to top

Im in PA at 717 area code. My sister-in-law (610 area code) called on our Verizon line and I told my wife "we're trying to test this phone so call her back on the Vonage line". She tried 3 times and only let it ring 6 or 7 times and gave up.

I called another person on 610 area code. It rang about 10 times and then the sound of the ring changed (got louder?), rang 2 more times and they picked up. Told me the phone only rang twice.

This is odd. Others that I've called have had no problem. I'm on hold now with V(out)tage to see what they have to say about it but am beginning to believe I got in too early.

Anybody else ever experience this?

The number of rings that you hear will not necessarily correspond to the number that the called party hears. When Vonage sends your call from their network out to the PSTN, it may be going through several intermediate switches. It's not uncommon for some of these intermediate switches to generate ringback in your direction even before the call has reached the final destination. However, 6 or 7 rings before it reaches the phone does sound like a lot, and may point to congestion in the carriers Vonage is using to complete calls to your area.

My! You do seem to be having a load of troubles with your Vonage features. Have you read the "User Guide"? May I suggest that you zip over to: http://www.vonage.com/help.php and start reading there as well? There is a world of answers there.

I know that the rings are 'simulated', just as they are for cell phones. But this is out of the ordinary. I might have a one or two ring difference, now I'm getting similar results to above. I'm calling from PA (484) and it takes 8 simulated rings to get through. Calling into my Vonage line goes right through.

This is too excessive. There must be something out of 'alignment'. I wonder if it's still residual from yesterday. I couldn't tell my wife, just let it ring 10 times. I barely have her letting me test this thing as it is. I wonder if AT&T is more stable.

Could it be possible that poor ISP connectivity is causing packets to drop out or be received with errors? Perhaps you should check. You might want to consider increasing your bandwidth by using the "Bandwidth Saver".

I prefer http://www.dslreports.com for speed and other testing. You can verify bandwidth at http://www.2wire.com

You gotta be kidding me... wait.... hang on... I did miss that feature in the documentation.

"If your party's phone rings 10 times that doesn't mean they're not home so just let it keep ringing."

Yeah I missed that .. what did you call it? - feature - in the documentation

Exactly! I know how you feel - I want this thing to work cuz I love the whole idea but the wife is ready to kill me. I'm sitting here in my office on hold for 50 minutes on a Saturday afternoon (just hung up).

I'm not tweaking another network setting. It'll either start working better tomorrow or I get out and wait a few months.

Good luck to you and thanks for the response which at least let me know someone else was experiencing this as also.

ZRexRider,
I too am experiencing this issue. It just started within the past hour (for me anyway). Packet Loss tests come back fine and Port Sniffing shows the connection but it seems to add 5-6 extra rings before the "normal" ringing on the other end commences. For example I've placed a test calls in the past hour to my wireless phone and my phone doesn't start to ring until the 7th ring (from my Vonage perspective). After my wireless phone rings, it goes to VM after the 25 secs that I have set. The same happens when I call others.

<Additional Info>Incoming calls immediately ring my line w/o delay</Additional Info>

I really don't think it is a problem on the ISP side, or on the IP side of Vonage's network. When you get that first ring, that means your call has already egressed out of Vonage's IP network and has hit the first switch on its way through the PSTN. The delay is occurring there. There is probably some congestion on the number of outbound circuits that Vonage has.
