PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2005 3:00 pm    Post subject: Does Vonage work with condo or apartment security intercoms? Reply with quote Back to top

I live in a secure building with an intercom phone in the lobby - you know the kind that you look up a person on the directory on the wall, punch in the code and it rings through to the phone of that person's apartment. If I want to let someone in I press 9 and buzz them in.

Has anyone had trouble with Vonage not connecting to the intercom/security system?

Thanks,

Sean

depends on how it's setup. if it's connected directly it won't work. if it dails your number, which I doubt, it should work.

Ok, I understand what John is saying. But I would like to hear from people with actual experience with this.

Do you live in a building with security intercom? Does Vonage work with the security intercom/buzzer? Did you have to do anything special?

Thanks,

Sean

these basically say what I said but it's from people who are using it. but as I mentioned, you need to know how it works.

MayoBeret, for reasons that I think obvious, but more importantly reasons that are obvious to the management in your building; not only should you not attempt to adjust the wiring in the secure buildings entry, but management will put a stop to it.

No secure building will allow a tenant to alter the wiring that makes the building secure. For that matter, neither will the other tenants. Sorry.

Don't know your situation in detail, but my boyfriend lives in a large highrise condo building with an intercom system that is linked to the door. You key in numbers etc and it rings his phone. Then he pushes a button and it buzzes the person downstairs into the building.

Good news, if your situation is like this, it will work without you doing anything since the system is tied to the phone number, not the line.

Hope this helps.

I work in a field that uses this very type of intercom. Kind of like what a whole lot of apartment complex's use. Dial in a code for a certain persons unit, it calls them, they press a certain button, and it opens the door/gate.

YES this will work for that.

HOWEVER, keep in mind that it is NOT as reliable as your standard phone switch.

(Don't you love those caveats?)

Heheh. Mike, you must be a landlord Smile Perhaps I was not clear in my question. I am not talking about changing any wiring in the building. I just want to switch to using Vonage for my phone service, and want to know if it will work with the existing intercom/security door buzzer system in my condo.

You see, in my building there is a special phone in the lobby for the "intercom." And there is no built-in intercom with a speaker and buttons in the wall in my condo unit - it just rings my telephone.

No rewiring is intended - I just want to switch to Vonage so all my calls come in through Vonage, including those "calls" from visitors at the front door of my building.

That should not give the management or the other tenants any reason to get upset as your post suggests. Unless they are concerned that too many beautiful women are coming over to visit me Wink

I'm not sure if it's just me but it appears not to work. The number rings through and I pick up the call, but when I press 9 nothing happens. I wonder if there is a way to fix this?

What happens if a tenant doesn't have a phone? Does the phone come with the apartment? If so, you probably can't do this. If not, you probably can. As Reebok, said, you need to understand the system in your apartment.
