PostPosted: Sat Mar 05, 2005 11:07 am    Post subject: Cannot config both routers.... Reply with quote Back to top

Two router problem:

I have the following:

CableModem ----->WRT54G Router----->RT31P2 Router/Phone

WRT54G setup is 192.168.1.1
RT31P setup should be 192.168.15.1

All PC's are connected to WRTG54 Router (1 hardwired, 2 wireless)

All PC's can connect to WRTG54 setup through 192.168.1.1
Nothing can connect to RT31P2 setup through 192.168.15.1

The only way I can configure the RT is to physically connect a computer to it.

The WRTG54 is the DHCP server (RT31P2 is not a DHCP server)

Do I have to set up remote admin for the RT31P since it's inside the WRT54G router?

I have a similar problem, i have a cablemodem connected to a netgear router fvs318 with dhcp and all my pcs connected to it. I connected the Vonage rt31 into the netgear and i cant connect to it. my local lan is 192.168.1.1 and the Vonage default is 192.168.15.1. I can't communicate with the rt31. I guess I have to return the rt31 and buy a telephopne adapter (no router combo).
any suggestions?

Get back in to the config on the RT. Place a static IP on it that is out of the DHCP scope on your main router. Enable remote administration on the RT router and take note of the port.

Wallah

You will connect something like this 192.168.1.50:8080

Here is how I would function....

CableModem ----->RT31P2 Router/Phone----->WRT54G Router

Have the DHCP set on the RT31P2 to on. Give the router a name in the advanced router area. Also tell it that it is the gateway.

Have the DHCP set on the WRT54G to OFF. Give the router a name in the advanced router area. Also tell it that it is a router. ALSO turn on RIP

On the WRT54G, Set the STATIC IP to:

192.168.15.2
255.255.255.0 - Subnet Mask
192.168.15.1 - Gateway
192.168.15.1 - DNS Server
Turn DHCP to off.

Have a ethernet cable from LAN of the RT31P2 to a LAN of the WRT. This will make the WRT54G act like a smart switch.

When you want to get into the WRT, goto 192.168.15.2
When you want to get into the RT31P2, goto 192.168.15.1

Remember, the RT is doing most all of the work, except for the Wireless stuff...

ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/rt31p2_ug.pdf

Operating Mode
Choose the correct working mode. Keep the default setting, Gateway, if the Router is hosting your network’s connection to the Internet (Gateway mode is recommended for most users). Select Router if the Router exists on a network with other routers.

Dynamic Routing (RIP)

Note: This feature is not available in Gateway mode.

Dynamic Routing enables the Router to automatically adjust to physical changes in the network’s layout and exchange routing tables with other routers. The Router determines the network packets’ route based on the fewest number of hops between the source and destination.

To enable the Dynamic Routing feature for the WAN side, select WAN. To enable this feature for the LAN and wireless side, select LAN & Wireless. To enable the feature for both the WAN and LAN, select Both. To disable the Dynamic Routing feature for all data transmissions, keep the default setting, Disable.

Static Routing, Destination IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and Interface
1. To set up a static route between the Router and another network, select a number from the Static Routing drop-down list. (A static route is a pre-determined pathway that network information must travel to reach a specific host or network.)

2. Enter the following data:

· Destination IP Address - The Destination IP Address is the address of the network or host to which you want to assign a static route.

· Subnet Mask - The Subnet Mask determines which portion of an IP address is the network portion, and which portion is the host portion.

· Gateway - This is the IP address of the gateway device that allows for contact between the Router and the network or host.

3. Depending on where the Destination IP Address is located, select LAN & Wireless or WAN from the Interface drop-down menu.

4. To save your changes, click the Apply button. To cancel your unsaved changes, click the Cancel button.

For additional static routes, repeat steps 1-4.

Delete This Entry
To delete a static route entry:

1. From the Static Routing drop-down list, select the entry number of the static route.

2. Click the Delete This Entry button.

3. To save a deletion, click the Apply button. To cancel a deletion, click the Cancel button.

Show Routing Table
Click the Show Routing Table button to view all of the valid route entries in use. The Destination IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and Interface will be displayed for each entry. Click the Refresh button to refresh the data displayed. Click the Close button to return to the Routing screen.

· Destination IP Address - The Destination IP Address is the address of the network or host to which the static route is assigned.

· Subnet Mask - The Subnet Mask determines which portion of an IP address is the network portion, and which portion is the host portion.

· Gateway - This is the IP address of the gateway device that allows for contact between the Router and the network or host.

· Interface - This interface tells you whether the Destination IP Address is on the LAN & Wireless (internal wired and wireless networks), the WAN (Internet), or Loopback (a dummy network in which one PC acts like a network—necessary for certain software programs).

The only reason I had the other one up front is because of the Phone issues.

If they want the WRT up front, then change things to match as above, but using 192.168.1.1 for the wrt and
192.168.1.2 for the RT.
255.255.255.0 - Subnet
192.168.1.1 - gateway and DNS

Read the above, and exchange the WRT to RT and vice versa.; and the ip changes

Please explain how you have it connected to the cable modem..

Cable -->RT31P2 (Wan port) -->Computer (Lan port)

If this is the correct setup, check your IP on your computer. See what the Gateway is. The gateway number is the number to the router.

If all else fails... Follow instructions of factory defaulting the Router.

Very nice posting! Also, thanks alot for everybody else that has been offering suggestions. Now that I've had the service for two days I realize this connecton issue is small potatoes compared to the service reliability itself. I literally got my device on Friday during the service interruption. Eek

Alan88888: that's what happens when it's downloading/applying a firmware update. if it was interuppted by something, it has possibly fried. unplug it for a bit and then plug it back in with no phone lines connected to it. give it some time. also, try hitting the reset button while it's unplugged, and keep it held for 15 seconds after it's plugged in.
