Being that should we cancel the service, Vonage charges our account the sum for $39.99 and will only refund it if we return the router/ATA within 14 days, I would say (and do) that we are only leasing the equipment for the period of time that we are Vonage customers.

Therefore, Vonage has every right to control what firmware goes on the adapters

P.S. this is only a response to the above quote, I am not hijacking this thread with another flame about the cancellation fee.

No, not true. My PAP2 was purchased at Staples and I'm not required to return it nor will I be charged $39.99 if I don't should I cancel. It's personally owned equipment and I confirmed that during one of my calls with customer service.

Part of me can understand why they would want to control it, not that I necessarily agree with it.

4.6 Disconnect Fee
Customer will be charged a disconnect fee of $39.99 per vioce line upon termination of Service for any reason or for convenience by Customer. The disconnect fee becomes due and payable immediately upon termination and will be billed directly to Customer's credit card. If Customer has multiple lines, Customer will be charged a disconnect fee of $39.99 per line for each line disconnected. To receive a credit for the disconnect fee, Customer must return the Device(s) undamaged and in original condition within fourteen (14) days of termination as set forth in Section 1.8. Vonage will not credit Customer if the Device(s) is damaged or not in its original condition as recieved by the Customer or if the Customer has otherwise failed to comply fully with the requirements of Section 1.8. In the event Customer disconnects multiple lines, Vonage with issue a credit for all disconnect fees upon all of the Devices (including without limitation Multimedia Terminal Adapters) in accordance with this Section and Section 1.8.

If retail activated TOS was any different from the TOS for online purchases don't you think that it would be reflected by a different TOS in the retail packs?

I would double check that the Vonage CS knew what they were talking about as I have had several arguments with other companies where the CS rep has insisted upon black being white, while a later call and a different CS rep has managed to deal with my complaint with out any argument whatsoever.

yeah, it's been documented on here several times that you either return it or are charged the fee, retail or not. so either the policy changed or this is simply another example of misinformation.

I wish that they would not use revisions like B, D, E in sequence on the PAP2. It's difficult to hear the phonetic difference when listening to 150#.

BTW, the Vonage tech that I spoke to yesterday told me that I have rev.D (he says the latest....uh-huh)..but when I listen to 150# I swear that it announces rev.B

I had to get a new unit and update my MAC address too. I kept calling and getting people in India in which English is not their forte. I called about three times taking about a total of an hour before finally getting someone who understood what I was trying to do. They transferred me to someone who finally spoke english. He couldn't do it either and after about 15 additional minutes on hold I got someone else who finally did it.

Total time, about 2 hours. I would think this would be a fairly common request, but why does it take so long to get someone to understand what you are trying to do. At the very least, they could give you a code or something you could tell the phone representatives so they can understand what you are trying to do.

I hope I never have to do it again.

I have a Linksys PAP2 and heard that the PAP2 has a web-based admin page that is turned off and locked by Vonage. It would be great if this feature was turn back on. Is there any way Vonage can set this feature on per request or is it off to everyone?
