PostPosted: Fri Mar 04, 2005 8:04 pm    Post subject: Connecting Linksys RT31P2 router to existing Wireless Reply with quote Back to top

Just thought I'd pass along my connection information just in case somebody else has something similar and runs into problems like I did.

I followed these instructions (http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=61) to the letter and although the phone worked, none of the computers received an IP address so they couldn't connect to the internet. I read a number of posts that said turn of DHCP in the Wireless router and others that said don't. I tried it but it didn't help.

Linksys WRT54G

I called support (40 minute wait) and he said to set it up like below (Wireless Router First). I did it and it now works fine. Supposedly you really SHOULD have the RT312P2 first but it just plain don't work!!

I've probably invested about 2 hours in set-up, screw-up and re-set-up. Sound quality seems good so far. Customer support is hard to get to and sounds like it might be off-shore workers so I hope I don't need them.[/url]

I prefer your first set up because it ensures a higher Quality Of Service (Qos), but your second setup is OK as well, whatever works. Now, did you set your DHCP server to "Obtain an IP Automatically" in the Basic Setup Page/Internet Connection Type function?

For the RT31P2 at http://192.168.15.1 set "Obtain an IP Automatically"
and the same for the WRT54G at http://192.168.1.1

You must allow the DHCP servers the ability to set IP addresses to your laptops and desktops. Check the DHCP servers on the first and second router. Ensure that there is no address contension between the two routers. You shouldn't have to worry about this, but I thought it should be mentioned.

I'll try to get back into it tomorrow but as you said - I prefer the first method too. However, it wasn't happy.

I hooked my internet into the RT31P2 and ran ethernet cable from one of it's ports to the internet port of the WRT54G then plug a computer into one of it's ports and .... nothing.

Tech support guy didn't seem surprised - just said it should work the other way and it does. Maybe Linksys has more information.

I hope this ends up being a good service because I really like all the features. Some of the posts today scared me a little.

Hmm.. I just realized I cannot map drives or connect to between computers on my network. Also, can only reach the WRT54G using it;s IP but not the RT31P2 Evil or Very Mad This is turning out to be quite an investment.

Did the WRT54G give RT31P2 a new IP address?

There are 2 approaches to the first method:

2 routers, 1 subnet
1) LAN to LAN Ethernet connection
2) Requires disabling DHCP on the non-RT31P2 router
3) Requires changing the LAN IP address of the non-RT31P2 router (example: from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.15.2)
4) Some services on non-RT31P2 router only available via the WAN port such as the web admin interface; solved by WAN to RT31P2 LAN Ethernet connection

2 routers, 2 subnet
1) RT31P2 LAN to WAN Ethernet connection
2) Requires static IP on subnet 15 of non-RT31P2 router's WAN IP address
3) Requires static route from RT31P2's LAN to other router's WAN IP
4) Disabling NAT on non-RT31P2 router is required for VPN client to work
5) If PC to PC connectivity is required, both PC's must be connected to non-RT31P2 router. With NAT turned off, subnet 15 to subnet 1 (for example) connectivity should function, but with the WRT55AG at least, it just doesn't.
6) No reason to disable DHCP on either router
7) From a PC connected to the non-RT31P2 router, both web admin pages should be accessible from their default URL's.
* A reboot of either router will result in the LAN to WAN link being down. It is restored by a physical disconnect/reconnect.

My setup works much better with my Sveasoft equipped WRT54G in front of the RT31P2.

It is a false statement to say that placing Vonage's router in front is the best method. IMO the WRT with Sveasoft firmware has far superior QOS features and a much more robust implementation of them.

I have my Router (Vonage) prioritized by Mac and IP and all of my upload intensive apps set to low (Bulk) priority.

My system is working far better than when the Vonage router was up front.

Assign your RT31P2 a static IP address and turn of DHCP. Go into administration and turn on remote administration.

You will be able to connect to the Vonage router like the following.

192.168.1.150:8080

I've given up on getting these routers to play nice. I'll have to settle with the WRT54G first. I just wanted the best possible experience during my trial period.

Going to stick with this:

Cable Modem---->WRT54G---->RT31P2
----------------------------------------------------

Both Routers - Internet Connection Type: Obtain an IP automatically
Both Routers - Local DHCP Server: Enable
With both devices having Local DHCP Server: Enable
I can us the phone
I can get on Internet
I can map drives and use Remote Desktop within my network
I cannot connect to RT31 using 192.168.15 or 192.168.15:8080

but as expected - report of IP address conflicts

Internet Connection Type: Obtain an IP automatically
WRT54G:Local DHCP Server: Enable
RT31P2:Local DHCP Server: Disable
I can us the phone
I can get on Internet
I can map drives and use Remote Desktop within my network
I cannot connect to RT31 using 192.168.15 or 192.168.15:8080

No Conflicts

So, I have service (phone, internet, pc-to-pc) but I stil can't connect to the internal router even though I've enabled remote access.

I've got the same exact equipment but I put the Vonage router first and I have no issues. You have to turn off DHCP on the wireless unit and then patch into the LAN, not the WAN. Also enable Remote Administration so you can get into it from your network PCs. Works just fine for me. I tried it the other way but wanted to put Vonage first to make sure I don't kill my telephone when I go pulling 7 million headers from a.b.dvd on Giganews.

all you have to do on the WRT is set NNTP for Bulk priority and the Vonage Device as premium in the bandwidth management. Its that simple.

The WRT is a much better unit

Is that IP in your WRT's DHCP scope?
