i'll admit i've only been hanging around the Vonage forums for about a month or so, but the whole adding a router to an existing router has been one of the more vexing issues i've seen, with some having a bunch of problems, and some working right out of the box (luckily, i fall into the latter category). i too think the problems are dhcp related. that's why i wish we would get a choice when signing up between the pap and the p2. my setup:

internet -> moto sb3100 -> p2 -> microsoft mn500 wireless

Actually mine worked right out of the box when I simply connected like this: Cable--->WRT54G---->RT31P2 but of course I found the web page where they recommended the RT31P2 to be first.

The only problem with that is they need a technician to bench test their examples and provide detailed set-up instructions for the top 10 popular interfaces. Most of the help I've gotten in this forum is much much better.

thanks

I had been running a D-link wireless router and when I purchased Vonage, I was initially dissapointed that they sent out the RT31P2 instead of the PAP2. I couldn't get it to work behind the D-link DI624 and ended up running this configuration after purchasing a WAP54G.

cable modem --> RT31p2 --> WAP54G

Though the phone worked perfectly, the features of both the RT31P2 and WAP54G were horribly lacking for what I needed (bandwidth limiting on a computer basis). Not to mention that the DDNS in the RT31P2 is not very capable (no custom DNS ability with DynDNS)

I recently upgraded to a linksys WRT54G running sveasoft enhanced software in this configuration:

cable modem --> WRT54G --> RT31P2

Again, the phone works flawlessly and I get the desired bandidth shaping and better QoS capability and DynDNS works. Here's my question.... Vonage recently pushed an upgraded firmware to the RT31P2. I'm ok with them upgrading the firmware, but with the sadly lacking DDNS capability of the RT31P2 I lost 2 days of e-mail before I figured it out. Whenever the firmware is upgraded, the DHCP server of Comcast assignes a new IP. Now that I have that problem fixed with the new setup, can Vonage push a firmware upgrade to the RT31P2 behind the WRT54G?

Thanks

Yes they can. And Yes the WRT54G with Sveasoft is a beast imo.

Which Sveasoft firmware are you guys using?

I have a v2.2 WRT54G, so my only option is Alchemy. Alchemy looks like it supports everything that I want, but it looks like the DHCPd is still a little flaky with it.

I'm running WRT54GS with Alchemy-pre7a v3.37.6.8sv

Works like a champ behind my cable modem and I've got 6 PC's and 5 terminal adapters in a mixture of wired and wireless.

Thanks for the info. I'll give pre7a a whirl tonight. I just didn't want to be the first guy to try it!

So far, my WRT54G-first setup is working great. AspectTec, I've read a bunch of your posts. Thanks for the setup details.

I got mine to work right out of the box. I have a D-Link DI-624 wireless router and the Linksys RT31P2-VD. I simply disconnected the power from the modem and D-Link router and shut down all computers. I then ran a cable from one of the wireless router ports to the wan port on the Linksys. I then plugged a phone into one of the jacks on the Linksys. I then powered on the modem, then the D-Link wireless and then the Linksys. You need to wait until the power light stops flashing on the Linksys before you can test the phone.
