I really don't see this as being a major problem. For the price that I could have paid for a landline in my area, I've got a cellphone and Vonage... and frankly this is the first problem I've had with it since I purchased it three months ago.

We've had several outages in the past few months, but I'm still not complaining. Unhappy it went out, yes. But ready to jump back to POTS, no. If this keeps happening, though, I may consider AT&T (as much as I hate them in general) since they control their own network.

I think it goes to say that any new technology is going to be unstable at one point or another, but it's new.

Just look how far we've come with Internet connectivity in the past 5 years... huge speed increases, nearly ubiquitous broadband, and in the major metro areas, a choice of at least 2 carriers. In our area, we have 2 competing cable-internet providers, DSL, and wireless. A few years ago, it was DSL only. Imagine what we'll have a choice of 5 years from now. Very Happy

jfryman wrote:
If you're using it for business, I think that yes... moving to POTS for the time being would be smarter

We have both POTS and Vonage at work. Our primary incoming numbers are POTS, and Vonage is mainly used for outgoing long distance. Saves us a PILE of money each month.

As far as the marketing goes... I totally agree that they're pushing way too hard for their capabilities...

Growing too fast can sometimes be worse than growing too slowly.

It's funny that when things are working, Vonage is the darling of the phone business. When there is a little bump in the road (like an hour or two of downtime) suddenly people want to run 'em out of town on a rail.

Most of the regulars around here recognize this is still an emerging technology and are willing to put up with some headaches. I've noticed that many of those posting in this thread today are newbies with 1 or 2 posts to their name.... probably just came here to complain.

PostPosted: Fri Mar 04, 2005 4:48 pm    Post subject: Vonage problems for over a week? Reply with quote Back to top

Our number was just transferred to Vonage last week - so we've only truly been Vonage customers for about 10 days. We have had problems every day. Every day someone tells me the they tried to call me, but received a fast busy or dead air.

I've sat on hold for hours. And sent an email to tech support last week - no response at all. Today, of course, we had the additional problems, which I could deal with if it is a rare occurrence. But our situation has made me very nervous about switching to Vonage.

I'm wondering, those of you with Vonage for a while - are problems like this one today/yesterday common?

And has anyone else had the fast busy/deadair issues this past week? Or does this simply happen all the time with Vonage?

Please, someone tell me I didn't make a huge mistake moving over to Vonage. Thanks!

So are you saying that regulars are somehow better than newbies?? Are you saying that regulars, since they are probably used to all the screwups, are better customers than newbies? If so, then hogwash!

Vonage is simply an incarnation of a service that is overly promised and under-delivered. People are used to great service from POTS lines, and for Vonage to come in and offer a substandard service means they are going to have to answer for it.....especially when the big phone and cable companies enter the business and wipe out Vonage.

Even now the company is 600 people short of what they need to service their existing customers....yet they are out there wildly selling it to new customers.

Just try calling as a new customer...you will get thru in seconds. Then try calling in as an existing paying customer....you will wait sometimes for an hour...or get no answer at all....or a busy signal.

Phone service is a commodity service, and Vonage is no where near offering a good commodity service.

Yes. I was experiencing the same thing. It's almost as if the Vonage Servers kept the connection open (even though you can make/receive calls). Mine did stop a little while ago.

I finally was able to get to their website.

Someone tried to do a firmware update on their network during the day, and failed. Eek

(speculation)

Looks like you were right.. from the dashbaord:

Due to a software upgrade in process, some customers may be experiencing sporadic difficulty placing or receiving calls at this time.

WHAT ON EARTH? IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY?!?!
