I'm trying to put my phone adapter in a convenient location which is a long way from my broadband connection. I have one router between my broadband router and my RT31P2. If I try to put another switch, a Linksys EZXS55W, between the current switch and the RT31P2, it won't connect. The Internet connection light flashes briefly. I've tried different cables, both normal and patch. Nothing seems to allow it to work.

The connections look something like this:
Code:
( Internet )
       |
   Router
       |
8-port Linksys Switch
      |     |      |
      |     |      |------- Server
      |     |
      |     |------- Wireless AP
      |
  ~ 40 ft ~
      |
      |-- ??????

If I connect a the switch in question to the last line in the diagram, then connect my desktop and the RT31P2 to that switch, the RT31P2 doesn't work but the PC does.

If I connect the RT31P2 directly to the last line in the diagram and put the PC behind it, the RT31P2 connects to the Internet just fine.

Is this a Linksys problem? Switches should be pretty simple, so I don't understand what's wrong.

I also tried to uplink an RT31P2 to a Linksys EZXS55W, in much the same configuration as you describe, and had exactly the same problem. Moreover, when I replaced the RT31P2 with a Linksys wireless router (BEFW11S4) just to see if it would work, that wireless router also had exactly the same problem.

This EZXS55W switch has been working fine for years, and like you said, switches ain't hard. So I suspected the firmware in both the wireless router and the Vonage adapter... until I plugged each of them straight into the wall, and they worked perfectly.

This morning I replaced the EZXS55W with a new Netgear 5-port switch (FS605), and now everything works flawlessly.

Hope this helps.

I have a setup similar to what you're proposing and my Voip works fine.

Cablemodem
|
4-port + WiFi router
| | |
PC PC 16-port switch
| |
Voip 5 PCs
|
PC

Everything works fine. Even though I haven't disabled NAT in the Voip router, I can still access my lan perfectly. Voip calls surely suffer more latency than they would with a more direct setup, but they still work fine.

Moderator: not helpful, and not needed. I already posted a solution to this problem.

You guys might want to re-read my post, and the original. There was nothing wrong with our setup, and I indicated as much in my post-- it turned out (for me at least) to be a weird compatibility issue between the RT31P2 and my Linksys EZXS55W switch (the same one the OP has).

Replacing the Linksys EZXS55W with a Netgear switch, in exactly the same configuration, works fine. That's the solution to the original poster's problem. You will not find it in the setup guides.

Thanks for letting us know about the compatibilty problem. Maybe we'll add that to the setup documentation as an *.
