I was checking the special link for the equipment and service and thinking about going with that when we move...if anyone has Direcway and Vonage...does it work better than Vonage and Cable (RR)?

Its not going to work at all. The speeds are nice, too much latency. You will talk, the other person will not hear you for 10+ seconds. Once in a blue moon a directway connection will work fine, but chances are there is going to be too much latency,

Then I will stick with my Cable RR...thanks for the info. Direct TV guy was trying to get me to get TIVO and says I need to have my phone connected to it but I am not messing with the house wiring...everything is set up in one centralized location and I want to keep it like that. Again thanks for the info.

satellite is prone to high latency as he said.

I don't use Direcway now., But I had it several years before other "Broadband" became available. I tried using Vonage during the last 2 months that I had it. I was on Direcway's consumer plan and it did work to some extent. I was able to make outgoing calls, but incoming seemed to be a problem. The calls that I made always had up to a second delay, usually never more than that. I was unable to use the computer while talking on the phone, if I did the call would break up severely or just drop.It always seemed I had to re-boot to get the TA to work, as I would lose dial tone a-lot. I mainly ran Vonage as a test and didn't rely on it as my primary service.

I can read what he said. A single satellite hop will introduce a round trip delay of about half a second.

It's really not the latency issue but the burst nature of the satellite service. You get time slots for your up and downloads - yes these are only milliseconds but really screw up Voip packets which unlike standard internet traffic are fire and forget. Usual symptoms will be very jerky and broken audio.

10+ seconds indicates a problem with your bandwidth, which is usually a bad install or dish point. I am so tired of Voip people blaming every technical problem in the world on latency. Please understand this:

Latency is the amount of time it take light (RF) to travel the approximately 24,000 miles up to the satellite and back down. That is a consitent 500 milliseconds, not 10,000 milliseconds that would cause a 10 second delay. It didn't take 10 seconds to talk to astronauts on the moon, so please do not attribute every delay, poor quality problem, or billing problem to satellite latency.

Glad I got that off my chest.

Not sure if you were referring to other posts or my previous post pointing to the Bursty nature of Satellite.

I agree with you that latency is only the turnaround time at the speed of light for about 44,000 miles + the CODEC time however the very nature of Time Sliced communication such as that used by Satellite providers, just does not like UDP packets and causes havoc with any Voip communications.
