My question is (and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere) that Vonage is not available in my area code and so if I decide to sign up for it I will have to use a different area code, but what if someone where I live wants to call me? Will they be charged long distance, because it's a different area code than the one they live in? If this answer is posted somewhere forgive me, because I could not find it anywhere.

well that just sealed it for me then. I don't want my work, family, or friends having to pay long distance no matter how cheap the phone service is for me. It would be a pretty crappy deal for them.

You nailed it on the head. It won't cost you anything, but everyone else will have to pay long distance to talk to you.

Unless you get the 800 number. Give it out to your family and friends. Just have to keep track of usage, cause you only get so many free minutes with that. Still, it's cheaper than long distance when you go over the minutes...

For all my local friends they just call me on my local cell phone number so if you have a cell have them call you on that and most of my friends use the same cell provider so it makes it FREE either way.

If the area code is long distance to them, then the caller would be charged as a long distance call.

If the area code is local to them, such as in my town with 4 different area codes, the call would be without charge.

If there is 4 different area codes then it would still be a LD call for whoever calls you unless they are in the same AC and prefix.

No, the city is divided up due to lack of available numbers. The calls between the area codes are considered local, without charge as long distance.

Go to Vonage page and look at area codes for your area. The list shows which may be considered local for calls between each other.

you can call to other area codes from a Landline phone for free in some areas.. like in his city where there are 4 area codes, but in teh same city, they have 10 digit local dialling.. Toronto is that way, they have 3 and soon to be 4 area codes, but it's local to call them all ....
