I'm curious if the Voip technology will ever allow for either of these features. Our transfer takes place Thursday and we'll finally be going 24/7 on the Vonage system.
I always kept a ringmaster number for the kids. I didn't run to take their friends' calls if they weren't home and it wasn't convenient. I would love to get another virtual number that would be for them alone if it would ring differently than mine, but I have no clue if that's anything that is even technologically possible with Voip. Also if we had multiple outgoing messages or mailboxes, it would be nice to have the option to add that feature on, even if it was for a fee.
The support for custom rings would be on the phones themselves. Voip technically already supports this....but you need an IP phone, because the phone is what really does the parsing/ringing. Since Vonage works with analog phones and not IP phones, this wouldn't really be possible. Once they get all ports working on the Vonage units, I would think the Vonage unit could figure out which phones (ports) to ring by checking the incoming DID. Of course, then you're talking about a mini-PBX, which Vonage is not. So...there are limitations without crossing into others areas of telephony.
