PostPosted: Thu Mar 03, 2005 6:09 pm    Post subject: Vonage Telco Connections Reply with quote Back to top

Are there any articles that describe without giving away any company secrets how the Vonage network connects to the circuit switched telco network? I assume that there must be some type of physical connection in each area code where Vonage numbers are available. I did a quick scan of the Vonage website and didn't find anything substantial about this.
If someone could point me to where it is I would appreciate it. Thanks.

try searching for Voip to pstn gateway. I believe this is what you are looking for.

Being the inquisitive type when I got my Vonage temp number I did a lookup on the area code and exchange and found out it belonged to Paetec.

Then the lightbullb clicked on. Most switches are IP aware. Your router connects to your nearest local Paetec or Focal switch via IP and then your calls are routed accordingly by that switch, most of it IP over their broadband connections that are in the OC range (Fiber for the most part.).

I surmise that most local traffic is handled over their regular trunks as there isn't an interconnection fee issue.

Speaking with Vonage reps I've pretty much been able to confirm all of this.

Thanks reebok and kd1s. Perhaps I did not express myself very well. I assume that my current telco owns my telephone number. If I want to move it to Vonage do they have to connect their gateway equipment to the telco switch on which my number terminates? Or do they buy a block of numbers in each area code or exchange and terminate them on them on their gateway and then sell/rent the numbers to their subscribers? I hope the question makes sense. I am also the curious type and I like to know exactly what I am buying. I think I understand the Voip part but if I have a local telephone number as part of the service I figure there has to be some kind of connection. If what I have surmised is true does that then mean that Vonage have placed there gateway hardware in the hundreds of exchanges where they offer local service? Thanks.

No, Vonage does not have to deploy gateways in every exchange. The routing information for that number is updated in the SS7 network and calls to it are either routed to a Vonage-owned gateway, or to one of a few large CLECs they partner with.

Local Number Portability means you 'own' your phone number and can use it with any provider be it wired or wireless.

What used to happen pre-competition and Voip was that when you dialed a number, the switch would look at the first three digits. If the middle digit was a one or zero it was a long distance call and handled appropriately. Otherwise the call went through a table that I know as Home Numbering Plan. That means if the three digits represented an exchange served by that switch the call is kept local. Otherwise it's routed via ARS (Alternate Route Selection) to the distant number.

Now when you dial a number the switch first does a database lookup to see where it's hosted. Then it points the switch at that carriers switch and processes the call. That's how LNP works.

Just hit http://www.telcodata.us

You can search on NPA/NXX (Area code/Exchange) or carrier name. Vonage uses Paetec and Focal.
