I've dragged my Vonage kit from snowy London to very sunny Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix.
Despite the fact that the very broadband in my hotel is slow, overloaded and a complete rip off the service works fine.
I've been using my phone just like back home and apart from the very occasional breakup during calls its working fine.
two happy smileys for use down under. Next stops San Francisco and Bahrain. |

Relocated to San Francisco and plugged into the net connection in the Hotel, all worked fine-ish. Probably a broadband issue rather than a Vonage issue, but the service did go up and down quite a bit.
However Chicago was another story, the hotel only had wireless, so no port to plug into. I guess if this is going to become more commonplace then a wireless bridge is going to have to be added to the incredible traveling tech bag. |

I know I've had poor quality when I used it in places with a shared DSL or T-1 connection (e.g. cybercafes, certain hotels, school dorms). It's fine if no one else is using computers, but when others are surfing the web and chatting online, it really wreckes havoc with the line quality.
Any try using it in Germany? That's where I'm headed and just want to make sure the services over there don't block IP telephony. |

Seeing as there are Voip services in Germany, this is highly unlikely. China or the Middle East, more so. |

Are there services in Germany or other countries on the continent that offer "virtual number" type services like Vonage?
Thanks. I wish Vonage would offer some in cities lik Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or Berlin, but I suspect it may take a while. |

iConnectHere has quite a good range of European numbers but you have to subscribe to one of their US-centric calling plans. Sipgate does German numbers but if you want a geographic one (recommended) you MUST have a matching German postal address, complete with PLZ (post code). The German regulator is much more fussy than the UK's about out-of-area use of geographic numbering.
In Germany, not much is allowed, and what is not allowed is strictly forbidden.
(That came from somebody married to a German, so don't take it the wrong way.) |
