PostPosted: Thu Mar 03, 2005 9:51 am    Post subject: Speed Tests? Reply with quote Back to top

Good Morning All,

I am a new forum member, and have had Vonage service for about 60 days now. I have a Linksys wireless network with AT&T cordless 5.8gb pnones. All is working well.

I did a quick search, but did not find answers, so here is my question. What resource does everybody use to test their download/upload internet speed? I am a Comcast customer and have indeed recently seen an increase in speed. I use "Broadband Reports" speed tests and was seeing about 2.7mb down/240kb up. With the speed increase I was seeing about 3.9mb down and 350kb up. This week, however, I am seeing about 2.6mb down and 350kb up. I have reported the anomaly to Comcast, but have not received an answer yet.

When I run speed tests using this forum Voip Speed Test I get about a range of 1.4mb to 1.8mb down. Up is consistently 340kb. Why the drastic difference in download speeds?

Any feedback on what I am seeing and additional sites for accurate speed tests would be appreciated.

The voip-speed-test site does not work for me - at least not upstream. For some reason no one can explain, I get consistently abysmal upstreams of less than 20k - but only on this one site! My ISP tested me at closer to the 1mb for which I am getting charged. The tests on dslreports.com also show my upstream to be in that higher range. I wish I knew why. It might explain the choppy audio I am suffering with.

I tend to think the speed test here does work for you, it is something else of yours that does not work...

I had same problem with my upload speed ehich was less than 20Kbps. But then I checked my processes by pressing ctrl+alt+delete and I forcefully ended all processes related to peer to peer connection.
Now, It's showing 385Kbps.

You must be sharing something. If you are using peer-to-peer connections, someone is sharing your bandwidth.
Good Luck

Have you tried www.dslreports.com. (I think they've changed their name to Broadband Reports)

I've used their speed tests for a few years now. They have a tweak test with a download for DRTCP which will help to maximize your packet sizes for faster surfing as well.

The thing is the ONLY site that shows my upstream to be slow is this one (vonage-forum). ALL others, including broadband, of which I am a long time member, show my upstream to be great. This is why I posted earlier the question "What is different about this site and how it does its speed test?"

I will post that info, please remind me if I don't. I am very busy right now.

You should run a good anti-spyware program on your pc. Do you have the same call problems when all pc's on your network are turned off?
