I tried posting this earlier, but can't find it.
I am having a horrible time trying to get vonage working! I have had both the ATA 186 and the RP114(package deal) for almost 2 months and have yet successfully made or received a single call. I have made at least 20+ calls to Tech. Support and have yet to have any real solution provided.
As I've read here I've forwarded all needed ports on my rp114 to the ata186 and still don't even receive a dial tone. I am thinking I might go by a different router but don't just want to waste the money.
I was originally very excited about Vonage and being able to get rid of LEC. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Have you tried unplugging the ATA and replug in after about
30 seconds. Then wait for the red light to stop flashing. This
can be more than one session of blinking. Normally wait
about two minutes. If that does not work, make sure you
have a signal at the ATA. Does the router show that port
is open? If not, you may not have a good connection at
both ends of the cable.
Just a thought |

I have tried doing this numerous times without any success. The Router is assigning it a IP Address and the router shows this as well. I'm starting to think it might be my isp issue - i can't even tftp from my workstation directly connected to my pc. |

My internet provider has blocked port 69 UDP. I am unable to TFTP as well. It makes me very upset because I have a Business Class DSL. Under my agreement my provider is not suppose to block traffic from any port. I've been on the phone with my provider complaining, but it does no good. I can't go to another provider because they are the only broadband service in town.
If port 69 is blocked, you should be able to use your phone. I was just unable to get firmware upgrades. I had to take the phone to a friend's house in the next town to get the firmware upgrade that I needed.
You might want to call your ISP to make sure they aren't blocking some of the ports..
69 UPD
5060 to 5063 UDP
and 10000 to 10500 UDP
I think the phone should work fine with 69 blocked, I think your phone won't work if 5060 to 5063 is blocked. |

I did not have to forward any ports on my linksys router. It says in the setup instructions that the Cisco ATA 186 should be able to work without forwarding any ports.
You may want to unforward the ports and reset the 186 and try placing a call again. |

I found that it's very helpful to set up your router to log network communication. You can then visit the log if anything goes wrong and it will help in diagnosing the problem. I use a link-sys router with wall watcher although link-sys has its own logging software and there are other 3rd party packages available. Make sure that any firewall software isn't inadvertently blocking your ATA communication. Make sure that your assigned IP address is compatible with your router and network communication. |

Can your ATA 186 receive a dynamically assigned IP address from your router? Lift up the phone connected to Port1 of your ATA 186, press the big red button on the ATA and dial 80#.
If you do not have dial tone, this usually means that no IP address is assigned to the ATA or misconfigured ATA. Also, make sure the RJ45 is a straight through unless it is directly connected to the cable modem. In that case, use a cross-over cable.
If there is an IP address, try pinging your ATA from a computer on the same network segment. |

Have you accessed your router to make sure that none of the devices have duplicate addresses? |

I have a Netgear RP 614 router. Was having no luck getting it to work (worked once). No dial tone, no ringing on my end,etc.. Was about to send it back.
Numerous times I waited 30 minutes for customer support. Got different answers for each person I talked to. No solutions.
FINALLY, one tech support guy (Jay?) had me do a hard reset of my router (push swwitch on back with a pen) to reset and get rid of all the stuff other tech support guys told me to enter, and NOT enter the port forwarding stuff. And disable SPI.
This seemes to have solved all my problems. |
