I am attempting to understand the results of the speed test. If I connect directly to the modem, the download speed is approximately 4.6 Mbps and my upload is about 350 kbps. If I connect through my router, my upload and download speeds are about the same (350 kbps). My router is a Netgear RT311. In both cases, the results indicate I can have 4 or 5 simultaneous lines and my QOS is ~70%. I am trying to decide on Vonage, and I think I want the Business Basic with a FAX line. I am not sure if my old router is slowing down my service to a level I need to be concerned about. I think I need to use the router initially to hook up the phone gateway so I can upgrade its software/firmware. Is this going to be a problem with this old router. Thank you in advance.

you said the results were about the same through the router, so I'm not sure why you think it's causing or going to cause a problem. if you order direct from Vonage, you will get a linksys RT31P2 which is a router also. it can replace your current one or be put in front of or behind your current one.
if you buy the device at a store, you have the option of getting a linksys pap2 which needs a router to work (well not really but otherwise you won't be able to connect your computers to the modem)
so to make a long story short, it shouldn't be a problem, and here's an opportunity to get a new router since you think your current one is older.

I understand that the RT31P2 is a router. Based on other postings, it sounds as if several people had difficulty with this router until they upgraded software/firmware. The way to upgrade sounded like you plugged it into the existing router and after it is upgraded, you replace the existing router with the RT31P2. I may be expecting a problem that I will not encounter. I probably could use the RT31P2 as the router and only worry about the potential problem if I encounter it. Thank you for your rapid response.

yes you're expecting a problem that probably won't happen, but why do you think it needs to be hooked to a router to get a firmware update? what about people who don't have routers? or people who have the RT31P32 connected directly to the cable modem?
in other words, it does not have to have anything but an internet connection to get the update if it is sent to it by Vonage.
