PostPosted: Thu Mar 03, 2005 8:15 am    Post subject: Wireless network and 2.4Ghz phones... Reply with quote Back to top

Hello all,
I am running a wireless home network with an 802.11b access point. In the past, though a different home, I had problems with 2.4Ghz phones taking down my network (I know that 802.11b operates in the 2.4 range). Currently, I use 900mhz phones with no problems at all. Is there anything I can do to the network to prevent that, or is the best bet to stick with 900mhz or 5.8 cordless phones?

There are fewer options with 900mhz phones, especially the multi-handset variety. The 5.8 phones are over priced....I always had good sound with Panasonic 900mhz cordless phones.

The above is Plan B, if I do not do the in home wiring plan!!

some 5.8 phones receive in 5.8 but transmit in 2.4, so beware of that. if you searched this forum you would find that info, including a few brands.
no one has been able to find the specs on uniden phones yet, but I know my wireless works with it. however, I also had a 2.4 phone that worked great with the same wireless network until I formatted my laptop. I have no idea what setting I missed or was different, but from then on the phone would kill the connection every time.
but like I said, there are many threads on cordless phones. search is located on the left hand side of your screen.

I am running a Linksys wirless network and have the AT&T 5840 cordless base station and three cordless remotes. It is a 5.8gb system and I have never had any problems.

Good Luck

on most wireless networks you can change the channel it operates on. If yours is set on the default channel (probably 6) try setting it to one end or the other (1 or 11) and see if your situation improves.

Of course (as you probably already know), once you change the channel, you'll also have to change whatever wireless devices hook up to it to reflect the change.

Has anyone verified that Uniden TRU8860 is 5.8 ghz both ways? Any other recommendations either other Uniden models or other brands? (Besides the ATT model mentioned in the above string)

I have scoured the manuals for the Uniden TRU88xx phones and they do not mention anything about 2.4GHz, nor do they explicitly state that they both send and receive at 5.8GHz. Maybe it's reasonable to assume then that they do operate at 5.8GHz in both directions, but I still would love to know for sure before dropping $250 on new phones.

Consumer Reports lists the TRU as being 5.8 both way. It was surprising how many weren't.
