Post subject: Vonage can't transfer number?
I checked the web page concening LNP. My number inserted indicates transferability 702-458.
I submitted all paperwork.
Recently I received this email.
Unfortunately we so not provide service in your area, check back in a couple of months because we are expanding. Or you can sign up for the email notification and we'll let you know. You can do this by signing onto your web account and marking the correct box. I do apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you and have a nice day.
Apparently the problem is on
Vonage
's
side. Is there anything I could do to bring about this transfer?

u can make use of the Sign Up page to check out if ur number is transferrable coz it's more reliable than checking it out on Availability. u can only fax the paperwork (LOA and Phone Bill) if ur already an existing
Vonage
Customer (meaning u have an account number with
Vonage
).
i hope i answered ur queries...

I just found out the same thing. Availability showed I could transfer it, when I signed up, it said I could transfer it, and now a month and a half later, I find out that I can't.
I'll be cancelling the service in 2 days after my callback from the "rejected number transfer dept".
I'm usually never one to b!tch and whine about stuff like this, but if they tell me it's available, then it should be available.
Can't wait to get the refund check for the 2 months of service, plus all of the forwarded calls from my landline.

Post subject: Hearing this more and more.
I had the same experience with AT&T CallVantage. I am hoping I have better luck with
Vonage
.
The AT&T rep explained that they included my LEC (Sprint) in the availability list because a few (a very few) lines in my area are serviced by SBC using my Sprint's wires. Apparently, they are willing to inconvenience potential customers because they unwilling to pass up a few potential sales to those SBC customers.
I would like to know if
Vonage
reckons availabiity based on the CLEC they are using in the area or if they have some other kind of list. Does one of the
VoIP
masters here know?

If you want action, file a complaint with the FCC, get them involved and things will happen.
I started my transfer from US Cellular in January 2004. After 10 months, it finally got transferred.
Vonage
gave me a credit for that time, as I was paying 2 phone bills. The problem, I was the first transfer between US Cellular and
Vonage
(who uses Focal Communications). Focal has to pay something like $15,000 to be able to initiate transfers. If you have 1 guy wanting a transfer, do the math, it takes a lot of months to recover that, so they SIT on it and wait for more transfers.
You really do not have a voice with all this, you are one small person, file a complaint with the FCC and get someone big on your side. It worked for me. For a lot more info, see this thread:

Ugh, I think I might end up with the same problem.
They web site says my number is portable (803-934), but my town is not listed in the small window list that the site also provides.
There is another town listed that is local for my area and serviced by the same company - Verizon. So if cross my fingers real tight, and a butterfly farts upwind in China, I'm hoping I still might have a chance for my number to be ported over

If
Vonage
doesn't have
VoIP
-PSTN gateway for your area code AND prefix you're out of luck.
Period. End of story. No amount of whining to FCC will change that.
The gateways can also come and go as they are not
Vonage
equipment, but are supplied by a third-party carrier.
Just try another
VoIP
carrier. There's tons of them out there and someoffer better LNP than
Vonage
.
