Post subject: Is Caliphonya trying to regulate Vonage out of business?
According to this site (
http://www.voxilla.com
), Calfironia is trying to regulate
Vonage
and the other
Voip
companies. Can this really happen? I live in Arizona and whtever Caliphonies do, we do later. This is scarey.

They might try, but the whole idea is flawed.
Regular phone systems are regulated bacause the RBOC/ILEC's are monopolies on the copper that enters the house. Because of this they must be regulated in order to prevent ( er... reduce/give the appearance of? ) them from abusing thier position. Even cell phones work on a monopoly position because of the wireless spectrum, once it's gone it's gone and no one else can compete in that area.
Anyone who says that
Vonage
has a monopoly would be kidding themselves.
So I don't see where the government has a compelling state intrest in the matter. I would see them getting around to taxing internet sales long before they get around to regulating the first real possibility of the
Voip
market.
As much as they are desperatly trying to get a larger tax base, I don't see how they will justify any regulations in this tiny market segment.

The compelling interest is that California is broke and needs the money. If there can regulate it, then they can tax or fee the heck out of it and get come money out of the pie.
Normal BS
