Hi all,
I am a Vonage customer and have a Linksys RT31P2. All seems to work well (knock on wood). I currently have DSL through BellSouth and use a Homeportal combined DSL Modem/Router with wireless.
I am moving soon and do not plan on having BellSouth service.
What I will have is cable internet service with Charter.
I am looking for advise on the "best" cable modem to use with the Linksys RT31P2 router. Any advise?
Thanks, Chris |

the "best" cable modem is one your cable company recommends. they are the ones who write the config files for it and know best as to which ones work on their network or not. |

Not necessarily because I have Comcast and they supplied me with an RCA cable modem and soon found out from Comcast Tech support that they recommended I get a Motorola SurfBoard cable modem to better take advantage of the bandwidth being provided. I purchased the Motorola SB5100 ($49 at Best Buy) and called and they walked me through the provisioning of it and even gave me a free month of service to compensate for the cost of the modem, plus I got to return the RCA modem and get rid of the $4.99 monthly rental fee |

Oh, sorry I read your statement too quickly, I thought you said/posted that the cable modem that is *provided* by your cable company, not *recommended*.
Anywho, I strongly recommend the Motorola SB5100, not only is it cheap (cost wise) but it works great. |

Well, of course, the best cable modem to use is the Linksys BEFCMU10, because its in exactly the same blue case as the RT31P2, and looks SO nice stacked nicely together.
(Actually, all joking aside, I *do* use that cable modem with my Comcast service here, and it works just great and has for 2 years now. I consistently measure right at the 4Mbps speed that my Comcast line is spec'd at.) And - the stack of cable modem, RT31P2 and WRT54G wireless router DOES look very nice. |

I also have to recommend the Motorola SB5100. I had an old Toshiba PCX1100 that I finally discovered had ~2.5% packet loss that was making my Vonage connection horrible. I got the SB5100 and all my problems were cured! |

Count this as yet another endorsement for the Motorola SB5100 -- I've had it for the last 1.5 years and it's still going strong. I even looked around to replace it recently (as part of my network upgrade), and decided to keep it as it's still one of the best broadband modems on the market. |

I have had cable internet access for a long time and have gone through at least 4 different cable modems. I have had RCA, Toshiba, Linksys and at least one SB4100, currently I have a Motorola SB5100 and it is better than the sum of all the rest of them. I purchased the SB5100 after the Linksys went down on sale for a very reasonable price, I think that they are the only way to go. |
