Since the RT31P2 is also a router will I have any problems using it with my exiting HomePortal 100? I need the HomePortal for the Phoneline network. Do I just connect the RT31P2 like an ethernet device and ignore the routing features and use the Voip connections?

Comcast Cable rents to me for $3.50/mo a Motorola SB5100 SURFboard cable modem. It has a choice of USB or Ethernet cabling. It is made to be left on and running 24/7. I've never had a problem with it.

the "best" cable modem is one your cable company recommends. They are the ones who write the config files for it and know best as to which ones work on their network or not.

That's exactly what I did and it works. Actually I have HomePortal then a Hub. Two Computers and the RT31P2 plugged into the hub.

The drawback is by doing this there is no QOS on the voice calls.

Comcast here in IL set me up with a SURFboard 5120 modem. Not sure what the difference is between the 5100 and the 5120 (and don't say "20"). I'm assuming they're pretty much one in the same. It has the ethernet & USB connections on the back. I've had it for about a year and a half and haven't had any connection/speed issues. But like others have said, the Linksys modem looks nice on a linksys stack.

Based on the advice of someone who's knowledge I trust, I purchased the Motorola SB5100 when I got my service almost two years ago. I've had fantastic results with it. My cable provider, StarPower (RCN) offers 10 Mb service; and, although I've not yet signed up for it, I understand that the SB5100 easily supports up to 30 Mb.

Well, of course, the best cable modem to use is the Linksys BEFCMU10, because its in exactly the same blue case as the RT31P2, and looks SO nice stacked nicely together. Smile

Im jealous, I want all of my routers & modem to stack & look beautimous. I do have the RT31P2 & a wifi 802.11-B Linksys router stacked together & they do look beautiloneous. If I only had the Linksys modem too, they would all stack & be that nice matching blue/black; then they would all look real beautilonemously...........

Seriously though I hear alot about the SB5100 being so good & I don't doubt it but I have the Motorolla SB4101 & it is excellent also..........

I use the Linksys BEFCMU10 v3 cable modem here on Adelphia and it works flawlessly, and as you can see from my avatar it looks aesthetically pleasing, If you are an aesthetic geek such as myself...

I have the DLink DCM-202 cable modem, Linksys RT31P2 adapter and the DLink -784 WiFi router. So far so good. Got the DCM-202 from Newegg.com for $34 after rebate.

I've been pushing the system in regards to doing remote access, video/audio, faxing and so on and things have been fine.

A couple of minor things that might be me.
