If you don't understand the difference then please go back to POTS!!
I'm sure Vonage COULD make your Voip line just like your old POTS including the bill but thats not what THEY WANT TO DO and IT'S NOT WHAT WE THAT HAVE CHOSEN IT WANT.
I am so sick of everyone wanting to regulate the world to their wants.
If you don't like the product the way it is, then don't buy it.
The govenment already has about 100,000 too many rules on it's books for everyones special interest.

Talk about hypocrisy! You obviously don't mind regulation when your special interest is at stake, but when it's something that may not personally affect you, you've got no room for compromise.

If 911 is something we must have for others to use "just in case" then put public 911 phones on every block. Its the same thinking as putting up a "beware of dog" sign on my gate to warn those that hop my fence and cut through my yard. Even then, if they get bit Ill get sued. I have 911 active and we also have cell fones "just in case". People need to take responsibility for themselves and stop blaming others. No hostility intended to anyone. Its up to me, not Vonage or the government.

One poster has suggested that Vonage should provide automatic routing of 911 to the appropriate emergency center. How could that be done? IP addresses can't be resolved to street addresses.

I think you're mischaracterizing my suggestion. What I asked was, why can't Vonage just incorporate the 911 signup process into the general Vonage signup process so that if someone does dial 911 from a Vonage phone, they would at least have a chance of getting help? That was the problem in the USA Today story when the girl tried to call 911 while her parents were both shot by intruders. There's no reason why that at least could not be done today, and it wouldn't cost you anything.

I agree... Vonage should make it mandatory for signup. The problem with that, of course is if one moves...
Sadly, I can see where all Voip companies may end up with a class-action lawsuit due to the ignorance of a few, but then in this society, ignorance can make you rich.

When you open the door to government regulation of this industry you can kiss all of the Voip advantages goodbye, because it's NOT going to stop at 911 service. Once Federal and State officials get their foot in the door, there will be regulations, and taxes, and regulations about taxes. Did I mention the taxes? And let's not forget about fees paid to the local incumbent carriers to reimburse them for their lost revenue. And how about fees to help lower income families afford a broadband connection so THEY TOO can get their piece of the Voip pie. How about adding a few small subsidies for local libraries and schools? They already have internet service, so why not include Voip services there as well? And let's not forget about the hearing impaired-- why shouldn't THEY get TTY service on their Voip phone?

Voip is either regulated, or it's not. You cannot open the door to regulation on one issue without setting a precedent that will lead to the same government regulations that are suffocating the telcos-- which is the VERY reason so many of us are moving to Voip instead.

That's an oversimplification. The government has an interest, as does the public, in doing simple things to "promote the general welfare" if I may quote the Constitution. Like it or not, phone service or Voip is not a right. And, like it or not, the government can regulate certain elements of our lives. This is such a simple, basic thing that I can hardly believe a handful of people are so strongly opposed to establishing a national emergency response service that I'd suggest the majority of Americans would favor.

If you're going to get upset about "rights" being taken away, then get mad at the Supreme Court. Just yesterday they overturned 200+ years of jurisprudence and ruled that suddenly now capital punishment for juvenile offenders is unconstitutional. Do you know what they based that decision on? Two unratified international treaties. Someone tell me how unratified international treaties have anything to do with the US Constitution. Five justices yesterday conspired to subvert America's sovereignty and subjugate our entire system of representative government to some unelected, unaccountable international suggestion box. That's almost treasonous, in my opinion.
