I am trying to reach my wife at her work and all I get is a fast busy. This happened last week also. It is a 1 -888 number. Don't like it., any ideas on the cause? |

I've had a similar experience when my wife tried to call 2 different catalog companies to place an order. I call 888 bridgelines (conference) for work multiple times everyday and have no problems so I suspect it is at the Landline end. Is your wife's number an order or customer support type line. I wonder if they block calls that do not provide full caller ID info or something like that? |

Are you blocking your caller id? The carrier on the PSTN side is probably not getting your caller id and will therefore not put through the call, because they won't have sufficient billing information to present to the enterprise that owns the 800 number. Test by unblocking your caller id and see if you can reach that number. If so, you should open a ticket with Vonage on it, because this is a fixable problem for them |

is it possible the toll free numbers are local toll numbers for your state only? Have you ever been able to get through?
I know you are in New Jersey and so is Vonage, but maybe the call didn't originate in NJ? Just guessing.
I know I can't call the E-Pass 800 number here because it's only active in Florida, so I have to call the local number. |

otaku got it:
| Quote: | | The toll free number that you are trying to dial may be a regional toll free number and not a national number. Companies who are using regional toll free numbers are paying the toll charges for this call. Since calls are routed via the Internet with the Vonage service the number that you are dialing from may be recognized as a long distance number and the call may not be completed. |

As a new user, I'm finding there's more to this fast busy signal thing. In my case it took several tries to get through even to Vonage's 800 number. Of course after going through all the menus I got busy signals. Finally by choosing another menu option I got a live person, who then transferred me to support. Then after 45 minutes someone answered in support only to take my complaint and say he'd call me back. Based on the experience of others I'm not holding my breath.
So here's the complete issue; maybe somebody has some ideas. The setup is a combined T1 modem/router with eight ports, and the PAP2 phone adapter hooked to one of the ports. I set up the adapter for static IP and am forwarding the four port ranges recommended in the PAP2 manual. There has always been a dial tone, but frequently when placing calls one either gets a fast busy signal after a brief pause or the recording "We're sorry, the number you dialed is invalid, please check the number and dial again." I'm using 11-digit dialing. Certain in-state long distance calls in other area codes are especially problematic, as are some 800/888 numbers. The problem seems somewhat random, in that sometimes the calls go through. By comparison, calling on a POTS line always works. Of course I have tried restarting the network and adapter a couple times.
If this doesn't get resolved it's unlikely I'll stick with Vonage. Who needs the hassle? |

Because people like me look to these forums for help I have to follow up my post by letting Vonage off the hook (mostly) for the outbound connection problems I mentioned above. The problem actually seems to be an interaction between the PAP2 adapter and our phone system (Voice Logic Voice Pro 512). The latter has worked fine with multiple POTS lines, but the PAP2 seems to drop or corrupt DTMF tones from the system. Thus we get the intermittent dialing problems, which perhaps are not number-specific after all, unless certain of the tone pairs are corrupted more than others. Now the question is whether the PAP2 is defective or if not, whether there are any adjustments that can be made improve the DTMF transfer? We'd lose too much functionality if we have to hook the PAP2 directly to our phones. |

You might want to make a new post in the forum about your problems. I'm not really familar enough with your phone system to answer, but if you make this a separate post there may be someone out there who will see your problem better. |

I won't bother with a fresh thread since this should be my last word on the subject. Maybe someone will find this useful. Often if you do enough searching you find you own answers. I mentioned above that my DTMF signals were being corrupted. It turns out that even though my Vonage line is very quiet there is still a noise problem with the PAP2. I found this out by trying the solution discussed in this thread: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2062-0-asc-80.html All you do is connect an off-hook phone (or short circuit) to the second phone jack on the PAP2. Problem solved, or at least worked around. I had wanted to sign up for another line if Vonage worked out, but I guess I'll wait until Vonage offers an official solution, if they ever do. |
