I received the router, hooked it up and faxed the telephone# tranfer authorization with a bill from MCI. I get a dialtone on the Vonage line and when I try calling my cellphone with it, it shows up as my house number (with MCI -- (718)357-####). However, I still havent cancelled with MCI and I don't know when I should. When I get incoming calls, only my MCI line rings. So what is going on with my Vonage? Am I getting billed already? Can people call my Vonage phone?

Vonage programmed your router as your home phone number. Once line transfer completes you will get call on Vonage router until then your MCI line rings.

Just normal procedure for Vonage. but if another vonag user call your MCI number then you will get ring on Vonage router becuase of Vonage network number.

Good luck with number transfer

So I assume I should stay with MCI until Vonage either confirms the completion or failure of the number transfer. Is this correct?

Is what I'm getting considered bill-able service yet?

You are 1/2 way there. You can make free outgoing calls via your new Voip line so go ahead and use it. Vonage should have sent you a Temp PH# to use until they get your MCI number transferred. I've read it can take up to a month for the bums and the Landline companies to release it. Mine took 10 days to get the transfer paperwork in order, then 8 days for my number to be switched. Once your number is switched your MCI service should automatically end and they will send you a final bill.

One more thing,

DO not contact to cancel your mci number.

Vonage will do it for you.

In a mean time, read FAQ questions.....

My POTS line service included call forwarding so I had my POTS line forwarded to my Vonage line until the LNP completed. I disconnected the POTS line and hooked Vonage up for whole house service.

The benefit of this was simplicity - all calls were made and received on the Vonage line. It was a great way to test Vonage and we didn't have to notify friends, neighbors, etc. of a temporary number. We didn't have to use multiples phones, etc.

The only downside to this was that the POTS service would forward after 2 rings, there would be a short pause (a couple of seconds) and then the Vonage line would begin ringing. Impatient callers would hang up before the Vonage vmail picked up. really impatient callers hung up during the pause.

Thank you for all your replies. They were very helpful.

I read through the FAQ but couldn't find a definite answer to one of the concerns I have. Will I have to pay two bills? Because right now, it seems like I have both services up and running. Vonage already charged me the 1st month's $25 when I signed up. Am I already in my 1st month?

From my experience with changing cariers, it was a seamless process. When I transferred from AT&T to MCI, the day my number was successfully transferred was the day AT&T stopped billing me and when MCI took over. Is it the same case with my MCI-Vonage transfer?

You are billed by both companies until the LNP transfer completes. Both services are live until LMP completes, at which time the POTS service is terminated.

That's what I did. I had call vantage and ATT had call forwarding option. so Please forward to virtual number given by Vonage.
You can find virtual number by logging into your account and click on account...........
