OK...on Friday my service quit working. After sitting on hold for an hour and then talking with tech support for about 20-25 minutes, they decided that my Cisco ATA was screwed up. They said they'd send me a replacement adapter. I just received it, and much to my surprise they sent me the RT31P2 router. I already have a router that I'm very happy with (and that I spent $160 on) and don't need this Linksys router. Is it normal procedure for them to send one of these things? I see the little Linksys PAP2 all over the place at places like Best Buy, Sam's Club, etc. and that's what I was expecting to receive.
I also got one of the
Vonage
baseball caps in the package.

Hey there,
I just started my service and got the same thing...I am charging my cordless phone right now so I don't know if I have my routers connected properly (I have done networking before but not with
Voip
so I don't know if the calls will work properly)
I have my main router connected to the cable modem and my RTP connected to the main router...we'll see how this goes

I'm worried that this is going to be pain in the butt to get setup and working. If it doesn't work,
Vonage
better have some PAP2 adapters around somewhere that they can send me...or I'll go buy one at Best Buy or something. I'm not getting rid of my wireless router that I just got not too long ago. I'd much rather have the PAP2 because it takes up less space, plus I really don't need the router capabilites of the RT31P2.

This one time, I went to the car dealer to buy a car. I found exactly what I wanted and brought it home with me! On the way home I noticed that the car has a CD player and a tape player in the dash! I don't have any CD's! I still listen to cassette tapes!! I'm taking this car back!

murphyrulez, you missed the point...
This one time, I went to the car dealer to buy a car. I found exactly what I wanted and brought a Toyota Prius home with me. On the way home the engine light came on, so they gave me a Toyota Tundra instead. I complained that I just wanted the Prius they sold me, but they insisted that they would only give me a Tundra. I don't have room to park this Tundra, it's a gas hog and I already have a truck. I bought a Prius for a specific reason, and now I'm stuck with two trucks, one of which I never wanted in the first place.
At my company, we've got 36,000 employees. About 26,000 of them are mobile users who are often away from home for days or weeks at a time. I sure wouldn't want to carry around my RT31P2 as Vonage's "Take-It-With-You" solution. Besides the bulkiness, it's not as easy to disconnect it from your home network when you're heading out. Assuming you hook it up as
Vonage
recommends, you're stripping your router and DHCP server from your network, so you'd have to reconfigure every time you leave and come home again. Sure there are other ways to hook everything up, but if you follow Vonage's recommendations, it would be a huge headache.

I totally agree with you! This is a case where Less is More! I wish they had sent me just the PAP2. I didn't need or want another router.

Post subject: Configuring an RT31P2 as a single network device
Not having done it, the following is my speculation of what should be done to use the RT31P2 as a phone but not as a router:
1) Connect the WAN port of the RT31P2 to a LAN port of your existing router
With a PC temporarily connected to one of the LAN ports of the RT31P2,
2) Disable Network Address Translation on the RT31P2
3) Enable web administration of the RT31P2 through the WAN interface

I have both the RT3 and the PAP (For 2 different accounts), as far as your set up is concerned the only difference is really physical size. Just set the RT3 to have a static address thats compaible with your current setup instead of using a DHCP. hook it to your router via the WAN port and fwd the approrite ports to the IP you give it on your current router,
I can relate to not wanting another router on the network though, I have a smoothwall already managing everything and at first i thought the RT3 was gonna be the end of my world. Was b4 i knew about thte PAP though, but I havnt had either long enough to say which is "better".

i'm kind of the same way. i already had a router and would have preferred not to have another, but everything has worked out OK. i'm not having any problems.
still, i think having the choice of a P2 or a PAP would be nice.
