I tried to use the software to use my voange phone number and could not use it. When I called Vonage I was told that to be able to use the software I need to pay extra $9.99 and have a separate phone number. I believe that this is an unfair practice by Vonage since under free features for any plan you choose it is clearly written that "Take it with You" which is explained as "Take Vonage with you on the road with your phone adapter or computer" . Because of the statement made I believe that this feature to us your main line on the software should be granted to each customer that requests this service. Please browse through the free features and ou will see that this is feature clearly promised to the customer by signing up for any of the plans. If you have faced the same situation or you become aware of it now please post message to earn your promised right. I talked to 3 levels of customer service employees, and what they told me was that the statement under free features does not refer to use voange on your computer which is a lie.
FYI: The reason why you cannot use you main phone number with Softphone is that they use two seperate databases where they cant have the same number listed on both of them, or that is what I have been told by Vonage employees. And ou cant have just softphone account without a phone adapter since the softphone database is created in a way that it doesn't let an entry to be added without an MAC Adress that comes from the phone adapter. Clearly Vonage tried to create a system where it will not give you the flexibility without the extra charge

I've read your rant three times now. I respectfully disagree with your position.

Yes, "Take Vonage With You" is listed under free features. However, on the same page "SoftPhone" is listed as an option.

And when "SoftPhone" is described under "Take Vonage With You" is is prefixed with "Want Another Option" (emphasis mine).

Finally, you can take Vonage with you for free. I have done so by carrying my adapter and plugging it into the Internet service at a hotel.

I concede that Vonage could have been more clear, and yes I would love to be able to use a SoftPhone on my main number but at no time have I ever been under the misguided notion that Vonage promised it to me and then welched.

On a different note, I personally find your posts very difficult to read because all of the text is in one solid block. I think your argument would be better received if you edited it to add some additional formatting.

I think that they should allow the softphone to be used with your main # and your main plan. Even if there is a separate fee for this.

I believe you should be able to use the softphone with your main number. It makes since to have that option.

You're right. The softphone feature should be included. And it should be a free feature (even if you pay once for the softphone which is a X-ten software).

Im a newbie but i think the concern would be simultaneous use meaning if you take your adaptor u can only use it at one time, if u leave your adaptor home then it can be used both places at once thus more minutes used ect.... I don’t know if that’s really true but just a guess. Personally Id just carry the adaptor esp if its a PAP2

The softphone is optional, their website clearly states that it is $9.99 per month. So, what's your question??????????

I was originally interested in Vonage specifically for SmartPhone as I travel alot. They made me get a home phone, which I don't want, gave me unlimited service on it, which I don't want and stuck me with a back version (X-Pro of XTEN.NET) and limited service of 500 minutes.

While I'm willing and wanting to be a Vonage Customer, their lack of market awareness will force me to look for a better provider

How much more clearly can we state this?

- I want better software, with better Outlook and Plantronics Support
- I want unlimited domestic and competitive international rates
- I want it now

Anything short of this, and I'm gone and I'm torching this place in lieu of my new provider.

I may be jumping in this thread a little late, but it was linked from a recent thread in the SoftPhone forum. Here's my opinion:

I do believe that the first thing should restructure is their advertising campaign. Not making the details of the service they offer 100% clear to their customers is obviosly nothing less then a bad thing.

I also believe they should highly consider reconstructing their pricing. Incorporating their SoftPhone service into a regular unlimited or even their basic plans is a good idea. If they have a $10 activation fee, that's fine. If you want an additional number- I would agree with paying an additional activation fee or what not. So- all-in-all, saying that Vonage needs to revise business practives around is fine.

My problem...is saying "Vonage executes an unfair business practice." Question #1- Does Vonage provide a toll free customer support telephone number for any potential customer to speak with a representative and ask questions? Question #2- Does Vonage have a free to register, support forum? Question #3- Isn't it the customer's responsibility to inquire about a service they are interested in aquiring, PRIOR to signing up for the service?

It is my belief that nobody forced you to sign up for that extra $10 a month. Furthermore, it agrevates me that people try to gang up on a company and try to create problems when they are agrivated about something that's their own fault in the first place.

Do your research first people.

If you don't need a home phone (and travel a lot), merely travel with your modem. It *is* fully portable.

You are not "stuck" with the XTen softphone. The SJLabs product is free and fully functional with Vonage.

An unlimited stand-alone softphone service is available. Check your PM for the link.
