I believe Pepperoni was referring to an external Soft Phone-type provider, which is why he had to PM the name of the company. I could point you to some too, but it is against forum rules! |

I do believe it is a bit unfair, but I liken it to the tactics employed by cellular phone companies.
Note that most hotels use wireless internet access making the softphone really the only thing you could "take with you."
I want the option to choose my method of connection. Sell me the service in a non crippling way. I'll pay extra for the softphone but expect it to have the same features/rate plan as the primary line.
Why should I have to pay for a hardware unlimited device that plugs in at my house while I pay extra to make calls while I travel using my computer? I guess because they know you want to use it this way. We refer to this as plain old gouging.

I am new to the softphone feature and have just activated it about 8 hours ago. I was surprised to find that paid WiFi spots like Starbucks aren't compatible....my home WiFi works fine. I want to use this softphone internationaly and think now its usefulness will be extremely limited. I'd appreciate feedback from softphone users who are satisfied (or not) and have constructive advice. |

I have used softphone in laptop and/or PDA from several different Voip providers. All worked fine in hotspots except for an occasional cutout or choppiness.
I HAVEN'T used Vonage softphone since they charge extra ( a LOT extra) for this feature.
Other Voip providers offer free softphone or very low fee and can be used for primary line.
Unfortunately, Vonage also blocks incoming calls to the primary line from other Voip providers. This makes the feature virtually useless with Vonage. |

My first experience and fast educational one with Voip. -Setup was great -Savings was great But then my office had my computer with no telephone socket(I'm tcp/ip wired), and I was tired of using my my handheld. - I didn't want to use vonages sofphone feature with a new telephone number?, and opt for simulring when I could just as well do -get an account with free world dial-up - a phone number with ipkall and link it to the above, and - simulring this for free in my office, to answer my telephone calls. So basically why is Vonage, charging me, as a paying customer, for the same service!. I've started to look around and already found three Voip services that offer sofphone hookups with the same password and userid as the router used. I have made many complaints to Vonage, and none have been answered, so I guess I'll be leaving in a while. But It's sad to see that there are others out there that have felt the same way and Vonage is not listening to their customers, and as the customers become more technically educated this could cause a quick drop off in market share never to be redeemed. |

Quick question for the more senior members among us:
Why doesn't V. allow softphone access on your regular number?
I'm guessing it's connected more to worries about usage than it is to the extra $10 a month they make off soft phone customers.
I tried V., it failed the spousal approval test, I cancelled and then bought one of the basic accounts for back-up and my own playing.
For me, soft phone would be the killer app, because it would let me unify my phone service (except for cell) under one roof.
