I signed up to transfer my existing phone number to Vonage over 2 months ago. A week ago a left an email as to the delay.

Today I received a $283.00 bill from my phone company. It seems the temporary Vonage number they provided while I waited isn't in my local calling area, and the charges are from call forwarding my local number to the Vonage temporary number.

I'm still waiting for last weeks answer, as well as a response from Vonage on these forwarding charges. Wish me luck. I'm still befuddled why Vonage would assign a long distance Vonage number to replace a local one. If it hadn't been forwarded, all my neighbors and family would have been paying long distance charges to call me.

I've asked Vonage to fix it or provide a credit.

Im forwarding my calls while waiting for my number transfer and after reading your post, I checked my virtual number and found out its a local toll call when my calls are forwarded.

Other than stopping the call forwarding until the switch, is there a way to change the virtual number to something in my local zone?

Two months is just beginning. I've been waiting since Nov. 23, 2004. There are areas where Vonage is very self serving and less than open with potential customers. When they provide a virtual number, and say go ahead start using the system, I certainly wasn't thinking that I'd be paying for two phone services at the same time. In fact I didn't know unti the middle of January when I got a phone bill from the service I was trying to leave. If I understood a comment correctly, Vonage has a third party handling the switchover and no one is keeping track. I thought Vonage and I had an agreement that I wouldn't pay for Vonage until the number was finally switched because they indicated a need for 23 or 24 days. After hanging up, the next day I got a phone bill from my original service and called Vonage and of course no note was registered and the service rep and I had "bad chemistry" from "hello". I asked to speak to a supervisor because I was now on the fourth time calling on my account. I was told that no supervisors were available. After asking 5 or 6 times, I finally said "are you telling me that I can not speak to a Supervisor?" The reply was that he would see what he could do and I was put on hold for one-half hour. The rep came back on the phone and said no one was available that he would put a complaint in the complaint box, which is all that he can do. I asked if someone would call me back, to which he replied he wasn't sure.

I've started trying to find out the corporate executives are and I haven't found any site or article that names them. I'm mad as hell and don't want to take it anymore!

I've only visited the Jacksonville-ish area, but:

I don't know how the phone system up there works. I thought it was 10-digit dialing (area code + 7 digit phone number). Now, most telcos won't start charging you long distance or even local toll charges until you add that 1+ to the beginning of that number. (This is how it has been in my experience, I know there are some areas where 11-digit dialing will get you local.)

Just curious, what is your exchange? (I am assuming 904 area code.) And what is your local phone provider?

Something tells me you will not get any credit to your account. It was 100% your choice to forward calls to a long-distance number. It's not Vonage or the phone company's fault that you chose to do it. It's yours.

I wish you luck, but I just don't see where it's their perogative to credit you that money. Even if you used the angle that the LNP took too long, all I could see them doing is crediting enough to cover your Vonage monthly costs, but the call-forwarding bill should be all on you.
