PostPosted: Mon Feb 28, 2005 4:35 pm    Post subject: QoS & Linksys RT31P2 as a Switch Reply with quote Back to top

First of all, i'm happy to say that my Vonage is working great. i've had it for about a week and had a couple setup issues at first, but it all seems to be good now. communication with some people using cell phones could be better, but it's hard to say if that has more to do with Vonage or their cell connection.

couple questions for the Vonage gurus. network is as follows:

Moto Cable Modem
|
Netgearwgr614v4 router
||
|computers A & B
|
Linksys rt31p2
||
|phone (phone port 1)
|
computer C

i have the linksys rt31p2 connected to a netgear router, which is connected to a motorola cable modem. i know this isn't the most ideal for QoS, but i've got pretty good up and down speeds from my isp and computers A & B, connected to the netgear router, never use much internet bandwidth. so i don't feel i need the rt31p2 on the edge of my network.

if any computer uses a lot of bandwidth, it's C (the one connected to the rt31p2) - could be emule or bittorrent usage. so my question is, will the rt31p2 use its QoS functionality to ensure that computer C's internet usage does not interfere with my phone call, making sure that Vonage always has enough bandwidth? i would think so, but i'm not certain.

to complicate things a bit more, i have the rt31p2 set up as a switch per paul248 and bunun's instructions:
Quote:
1. Disable NAT and DHCP on the RT31P2
2. Connect a patch cable between the Internet port and a LAN port.
3. Connect one LAN port to the other router
4. Connect the last LAN port to your compute

the netgear router has 192.168.0.x as it's internal LAN IP address. Computer C has 192.168.0.xx as its IP address, with the netgear router (192.168.0.x) setup as its default gateway and DNS server.

do i get QoS functionality with this setup?

my feeling is that doing it this way bypasses the QoS functionality of the rt31p2. i assume that QoS only takes place went packets are sent out the WAN port, and not a LAN port - hopefully i'm wrong. Smile

if the answer to my question in the first post is YES, and the answer to the 2nd post is NO, i will probably change things up a bit.

thx

first is yes, second is not sure. probably not.
but you probably could have tested it in the time you took to post. just get on a call while uploading to a local and/or fast site and see if your upload speed is throttled.

isp's usually offer web space. that's probably your best bet.

I have my RT in front of my network hub as the gateway because of the QOS ability. What I am not sure about is does is take 90k of upload bandwidth only when needed or reserve it. I tested with the QOS off on the voice part, on in the network part and running WInMX wide open with uploads and downoads going on and the person I call could not here me. I have lots of download ability, not much upload. Wondering if the QOS works when uploading.
