PostPosted: Mon Feb 28, 2005 2:19 pm    Post subject: Question: Is this Possible? Reply with quote Back to top

Can I

1. Get Vonage with a new phone number, keep my landline, but have all outgoing Vonage calls appear to come from my landline number? That is, if I do not sign up for LNP.

2. Get Vonage with a new phone number, keep my landline, but at a later date sign up for LNP.

Thanks!

Note: The reason I would do #1 would be to keep my regular phone service, but just drop the long distance, and use Vonage for all my outgoing calls, using the land line only for incoming calls. I would prefer to do this for a few months, till I feel really good about the quality of the Vonage service, before deciding to migrate my landline number to Vonage and drop SBC entirely. Hope that makes sense.

1. that would be caller id spoofing at best. you might find somethng that does that. I think there was some talk about it here before. try searching. (short answer is no though, not without some effort, and maybe not then)
2. yes but there is a charge for it if you do it later I believe. might be possible tog et it waived if you want to go through the hassle. your best bet is to sign up for lnp to begin with but don't fax the documents until you're satisifed. if you're never satisified and you cancel, then no harm no foul.

So sounds like when someone signs up for LNP normally, and gets a temporary Vonage phone number, calls from that Vonage line do *not* appear to come from the POTS number?

If so, then it seems like it would be confusing to all the people who get calls from the customer before the LNP goes through. Suddenly they see a new number on their caller id. Far from seemless.

Thanks

heh, yeah, I think your expectations were set a little beyond what the telecom industry in general offers. cell providers can transfer in hours, but that's as close to what you want as is available at all (and obviously not available with landline/voip).
the number that will show up will be the number of the line. you can use your pots line until the lnp completes obviously.

Ok, thanks, I just found this answer on their web site:

Quote:
During the number transfer process, calls made by non-Vonage customers to the number being transferred will ring on your non-Vonage phone. Your Vonage phone will receive calls in one of two ways:

Calls from anyone to your temporary virtual number.
Calls from other Vonage customers to the number being transferred.

After your number transfer has completed all calls will go directly to your Vonage phone. If you are receiving a specific error when calling the virtual number, please contact us for assistance.

I hate to contradict everyone, but....

I signed up under scenario #2 (got a Vonage number and then decided to do the LNP transfer).

My transfer has not completed yet, so I still have my BellSouth line, but all of my outgoing Vonage calls do show my landline number in caller ID. No one has any idea my calls are coming from Vonage. In the Dashboard, the original number I got from Vonage is listed as a virtual number now and my primary number is the same as my landline.

I just checked it again by having my wife call me at work and it shows my landline number.

really, that's interesting, I never realized that, plus it defies logic. is your number to be ported the one showing up under status of the rt31p2 (if that's what you have)?
so what you're saying is, Vonage assigned number showed up on outgoing calls. sent in paperwork for lnp. now number to be ported shows up on outgoing caller id. right?
apologies for the misinformation westpost.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. I used Vonage for two weeks with a newly assigned number, then I signed up for LNP and my Vonage assigned number became a virtual number, and my landline number became my Vonage number. My landline number (still waiting to be ported) shows on caller ID when I make calls from Vonage and is also the number listed on the RT31P2 status page.

Maybe they screwed something up with me and I just got lucky, but that's exactly how I hoped it would work and sure enough, it is.

Congrats on reaching 1,000 by the way. I know you blew the golf shirt, but I think you still qualify for the free hat.

Interesting! I thought someone told me the same thing. Now the question is, what if you never sent in your paperwork for the LNP? Could you keep this arrangement forever?

I just called Vonage and they said what you said. Then I asked them if I could just keep the POTS but add a Vonage line, and have it work the same way. They said no. So sounds like they have the ability, but don't offer this second option.
