Post subject: Day 2, and the frustrations are still here
This is the second day i've had
Vonage
service. I was referred by a friend who swears by this. So far, it's been a nightmare, and based on some things i've read here, i'm dreading having to deal with customer service.
I"m sure this is addressed somewhere on the forums, but i've looked around 2 hours and haven't found an exact answer.
Here's my setup.
Time Warner Cable-->Webster modem-->Linksys WRT54GS wireless router--> RT31P2-->Uniden Power Max 5.8GHz phone
I had a dial tone out of the box within 15 minutes of moving things around. THe sound quality is kickass, and the dashboard is sweet.
but...
Anytime i do anything on the internet, whether pull up a site or download something, the power light on the phone adapter continues to blink until i unplug it. As soon as i unplug it and plug it back in, it works within 30 seconds, and there's a dial tone. I had to "power cycle" this 8!! times yesterday evening.
I've read through the forum, and have no idea what QOS or anything like that is. I have the quality set to the highest possible.
Another thing, i can connect to my wireless router with no problems, but I can't ping, or connect, to the phone adapter.
Can someone either link, or explain in detail, what i can do. I"m so close to cancelling this already.

strictly for the purposes of troubleshooting can you try the following and see if you still have problems;
connect the rt31p2 directly to the cable modem and connect your phone and pc to the rt31p2.

And to allow QOS, it's best to do it in this order:
Cable Modem -->
Vonage
Router --> Your router.
At least that's how I have it set up and haven't had anyh problems at all. Interestingly the
Vonage
supplied RT31P2 has a firewall installed on it - my Netgear FVS318 now just emails me the NTP request logs and every one in a great while a SMURF attach will make it from the Linksys to the Netgear router.

just relax dude, by the end of the day, someone here will have an answer for you..
the one thing I do know, is that you won't be able to connect to your RT31P2 from a computer that isn't directly plugged into it, unless you change some settings frist, but you have to plug into it directly forst, or, have your wireless router plugged into your RT31P2..

i don't know if i want it that way. i have quite a few things forwarded through the port forwarding. i think that it may mess that up. i just called, after i power cycled the modem, my friend who recommended this. his response..yea it sucked for like a week, but then it started working.

So it's not working the way you've got it setup, and you're also not willing to try something new? Kinda gonna be hard to help you, then.

i didn't mean for it to come off like that. i'll hook it up, i was just kind of asking (in an odd way) if the port forwarding would be affected

Sounds like you would've been better off with the Linksys PAP2 behind your existing router. I purchased mine from Circuit City on a free after rebate deal. Don't know what
Vonage
's practices are when order through them, but seems like they should check to see if the customer already has a router before shipping a TA with a router built in.
Haven't had a single problem with this PAP2 in the 3 months we've been using it.
