I'm in the 248 area code and have read hundreds of postings/replies as to how to get a DirecTV/Tivo to make the daily call thru vonage. Have tried countless configurations and can't get it to dial in. Has anyone had any success in this area code with similar set up that can enlighten me? Help is appreciated. |

I encourage you to save yourself the frustration and use the serial PPP connection. Much easier and it'll only take you a little bit of time to set it up. |

Can you please expand on the Serial PPP option? I am getting DirecTv's HD receiver with TiVo in it. They advertise the need for the landline. I am currently using a stand alone TiVo with my other receiver, which is hooked up to broadband. I'm familiar with the issues involved with TiVo/Vonage. But I do not know what you are talking about with the Serial PPP thing. Thanks in advance, my email is shawn.barnhart@gmail.com

Try this out and let me know how it works out. It should work for you.

DirecTV / Tivo has the serial ports shut off. You can only use the modem to connect, hence the heartburn. |

This is incorrect. I have the new HD H10 and the R10 and connect both of them for updates via the serial connections. The USB ports are disabled (at least in the R10).

It is the USB ports that are disabled, at least in the R10. I could not get Directivo to dial in no matter what combination of dialing codes I used. Ended up taking it to a neighbors land line to make the initial set-up call after that serial PPP and have never had a problem. I highly recommend that you take the litte time it takes and set it up to use serial PPP otherwise unless you get lucky like some people have, you will end up pulling your hair out. |

A simple modification to any DirecTIVO Series 2 model will activate the USB ports and allow one to do a LOT of stuff, including downloading recordings to your PC, transferring recordings between TIVO's, etc. |

Care to expand on that? |

This isn't the proper forum for that. There's one that discusses this and a whole lot more on how to modify one's DirecTV/TIVO units to eliminate the call-out altogether. |
