Hello
I bought a Linksys WRT54GP2 at Best Buy earlier this past week and would like to move my existing Vonage number to that adapter.
I've attempted to contact Vonage via telephone and I've waited and waited, and couldn't wait any longer. I've also sent e-mail and replied to it asking that I really wanted support, and have yet to hear from them.
Anyone know what I need to do? If I go through with activating the adapter, can I just switch my old number over to it? Do I really need to talk to some person at Vonage?
Thank you in advance.

I am not positive, but I will give you a suggestion to try, go to the vonage.com site and go to "retail activation' and then choose, 'add a line' and then it askes you to log in, see if once youre logged in if you can choose to swap adapters.. if it works then you're good to go if not, then try and call back late tonight when they're not too busy.. |

Thanks for the suggestion.
I have attempted to do that and it gives me the option of choosing a new number or porting an existing number. I did attempt to see if I could port my Vonage number and it wouldn't let me.
So, the only option which works is to assign me a new telephone number. I would do this, as long as I could re-assign my number in the dashboard, but I'm sure I can't without calling them. |

hrmmm sorry.. I wasn't sure.. yeah, all I'd say is wait till later tonight and try to call then.. or call the activation/sales line they answer quicker, they might be able to switch you, I kinda htink not, but you can try if you're bored..
you won't be able to swap numbers in your dashboard, so dont' try that.. |

I have a SoftPhone so I used that to sit on hold. I only waited 17 minutes and got through. It took him about 15 seconds to change my number over to the new adapter. All he needed is the MAC address.
Of course, it doesn't work yet, but we'll see. I literally just got off the line with the guy. |

I'm not sure Vonage would sanction this but here goes.
I am relatively sure that they use the MAC address on the WAN port of the router in order to authenticate you. If you can tweak the MAC on the new router to match that of the old I'm betting your phone service will work.
It is what I plan to do when I build my Asterisk PBX. I'll just clone the MAC of my RT31P2 onto the NIC on the Asterisk box. As it is Asterisk does SIP and supports the codecs used by Vonage. |

Not a good idea. Remember, they push firmware updates based on the registered equipment. Might be nasty if they push firmware for a PAP2 or WRT31P2 to a WRT54GP2.
On the Asterisk, how do you plan to register and authenticate without the adapter since Vonage will not share that information with you for login and password to authenticate? Id recommend thinking that through a little better. |

all of these are the problems experienced with vonage.
No access to your SIP device - though you OWN IT.
Can't switch it out if it fries! and with no phone..how do you call them?
they have lousy customer service but I personally didn't sign up for their customer service, I signed up for VOIP phone service. and I have it. |

Updates won't be accepted by Asterisk. It'll just block them on the Linux box.
That is just the point - I can watch the traffic stream and get those identities. I also suspect your login ID for the vonage web site is the same as your SIP login. I'll post my results here when I start the project. |
